Baba Is You is an original puzzle game created by the independent Finnish developer Arvi "Hempuli" Teikari. The prototype was the winner of the Nordic Game Jam in 2017.

Mechanics

Baba Is You stands out from the rest of the genre by being enabling us to manipulate the rules of the game. The game consists of one hundred levels of puzzles of increasing difficulty, each with unique constraints described by simple verbal messages; we can modify them in order to influence the way we interact with objects or even completely change the goal that is necessary to access the next stage.

For example, setting the title words "baba is you" next to each other enables us to control the main character we observe from a top-down perspective; however, if we change the message to "rock is you", we will take control of the stone visible on the screen. Another example are the walls which we can penetrate if we separate the words "walls" and "stop", or even lava, which does not pose a threat to us after separating the words "lava" and "melt".
