Battlefield 2 for PC is a continuation of the extremely popular PC FPS games entitled Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam, as well as Battlefield: Modern Combat for PlayStation 2. The game focuses on a hypothetical armed conflict from the turn of the 21st century, when three factions war one another: United States, China, and the coalition of Middle Eastern states. Of course, each side has a rich arsenal of munitions, including small arms (M-4 rifle, M-9 pistol, etc.) and all sorts of vehicles (approximately thirty machines, including M1A2 Abrams tank, UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter, and the HMMWV vehicle ).

Virtual battlefields (detailed environments of very high interactivity) refer to real locations in various parts of the globe (urban areas, dense forest formations, etc.). Even over a hundred people can participate in a battle at the same time (the size of the map is determined by the number of soldiers present at a particular time). Military service runs not only in the frontlines, but also at the HQ, so both fans of shooting and seasoned strategists should be pleased. Making progress results in increasing the military rank which is required to unlock hidden surprises (e.g. additional types of weapons).

The main cons of the game

  • Outdated Graphics: While some players argue that the graphics are still decent, many acknowledge that they are significantly dated compared to modern games.
  • Technical Issues: Players report various technical problems, including issues with Punkbuster, server connectivity, and compatibility with newer operating systems (like Windows 10).
  • Singleplayer Limitations: The singleplayer mode is described as lacking depth, often feeling like a less engaging version of multiplayer against bots.

  • Official Server Support: The shutdown of Gamespy servers means that official multiplayer support is no longer available, pushing players to rely on community-hosted servers and mods.
  • Modern Quality of Life Features: Players miss the convenience and features found in newer Battlefield titles, such as improved matchmaking systems and better server browsers.
  • Enhanced AI: While the game has bots for singleplayer, users express a desire for more sophisticated AI, as current bots can be predictable and less challenging.
  • In-Game Updates and Support: There is a general sentiment that EA has neglected the game and its community, with no recent updates or official support for ongoing issues.

Summary

  • Overall, Battlefield 2 is celebrated for its gameplay and community, despite its age and the challenges posed by the lack of official support. Players recommend it primarily for the modding community and nostalgic value, while cautioning potential buyers about its current limitations and availability.
