Beat Saber is a rhythm game developed by Hyperbolic Magnetism – an independent Czech studio responsible for well-received Chameleon Run which was released on mobile devices.
Beat Saber is an unusual rhythm game dedicated to VR peripheralia. In its basic idea, the game is similar to Guitar Hero series – the player presses the buttons that appear on the screen. Beat Saber plays out similarly, but instead of notes, the player encounters colorful cubes called “beats”. Our task is to destroy those cubes using two lightsabers – red (held in the left hand) and blue (held in the right hand). Their color is important as beats can only be destroyed when hit with the saber of the same color. Moreover, each cube is marked with the direction (down, up, right, left) from which one needs to hit the object. The maps also contain various obstacles – the game was designed as to make the process of beating a level similar to dancing. As a result, the players wave their hands and move to avoid obstacles to the rhythm of electronic music.
Beat Saber offers futuristic, neon graphics, but visuals are not its biggest advantage. As in case of every rhythm game, the game’s mainstay is its soundtrack. It may not be extensive, but the soundtrack offers energetic tracks recorded by Jaroslav Beck, an author known from LawBreakers soundtrack or the music for trailers of various movies and games, including Call of Duty: WWII, and StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.
