Bloodgrounds is a tactical game blending RPG and strategy elements, set in a fantasy realm inspired by Ancient Rome. You play as a Patron who sends gladiators to participate in arena battles, which occur in turn-based mode. You can also expand the city of Maravento, which serves as your central hub.
Gladiator battles are one of the themes that blend well with tactical gameplay. Among the games based on this combination is Bloodgrounds - a title on the border of RPGs and strategies, developed by Exordium Games. This is an independent development studio from Croatia, with projects like Bear With Me and Last Encounter in its portfolio.
In Bloodgrounds the action is viewed from an isometric perspective.
The core of the gameplay consists of battles in arenas. We lead gladiators into these battles, who vary in terms of profession, and consequently, preferred weaponry and combat skills. Among them, we find melee fighters, units that eliminate enemies from a distance, as well as those who possess magical powers.
Before a gladiator agrees to fight for us, we must first recruit them by paying them in gold, defeating them on the battlefield, or showing them mercy in the arena. As we progress, we develop our subordinates, making them increasingly valuable to us over time, and the death of each becomes more painful. The game implements a permadeath mechanic, which means fallen warriors cannot be resurrected.
The fights are conducted in a turn-based mode, and the order of moves is determined by the initiative bar. Besides skillfully juggling the characters' abilities and making use of their strengths, the key to success is the proper placement of units on the battlefield. Additionally, we can increase our chances of victory by setting traps for enemies, gaining the favor of deities that provide powerful abilities, and winning the audience's sympathy, which grants access to valuable rewards.
Between arena battles, we find ourselves in the coastal city of Maravento, which serves as our command center. The gold earned by our gladiators is invested not only in better equipment for them, but also in the expansion of the town. We can construct and upgrade various buildings, such as an infirmary where our warriors heal their wounds, a market, or a monument honoring the fallen. By defeating the arena master of a given region, we not only advance to the next one, gradually approaching the empire's capital, but also gain access to new buildings and items.
Bloodgrounds transports us to a fantasy world inspired by ancient Rome. We take on the role of a patron who trains and sends gladiators into battle, aiming to get closer to the mad emperor to exact revenge for the murder of his father.
The graphics of Bloodgrounds are created using pixel art technique.
