Doom II: Hell on Earth is a production that, even with many decades behind it, enjoyed great popularity among modification authors. The latter included both minor projects and much larger undertakings in the form of so-called total conversions, that is, de facto new games using the technology and selected elements of the original. Among them was Trench Foot from the independent TrenchWork team, which before its release received a prequel in the form of Butcher's Summit, described here.
In Butcher's Summit the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). Three maps were created for the mod, which we traverse in the guise of a fanatical Templar named Cloten. In addition to heretics, along the way we fight monsters like brutes equipped with machetes. The enemies, of which there are several dozen types altogether, are eliminated using several types of weapons, including a special impact cannon and landmines.
Butcher's Summit takes us to the dieselpunk universe of Cretu, combining World War I inspiration with elements straight out of Cthulhu Mythology. As Cloten, we travel through the Vosnian hills, where a ground-to-air battery used by heretics is located. Our main task is to destroy the installation, thus gaining the chance to reverse the fate of their war with the rebels in favor of the theocrats.
The story told in the game is conveyed through film interludes and found notes. The action of the mod in question precedes the events of Trench Foot.
As we are dealing with a modification to the second part of the Doom series, the graphic design of Butcher's Summit is kept in a retro style, straight from the first half of the 1990s.
