Company of Heroes 3 is the next installment in a series that unites the characteristic features of tactical and strategy games. Relic Entertainment studio once again takes us to the front of World War II.

The third installment of the series shows the Mediterranean theater of operations - it allows you to command soldiers in Italy and North Africa. It also depicts the fate of German Afrika Korps units, including the Battle of Tobruk.

Game mechanics

A key element of Company of Heroes 3 is a dynamic campaign map used for taking strategic decisions. It is on it that we occupy key positions or secure supply lines. We use naval, air and ground forces to do this. Orders given at this stage are reflected both on the map and during tactical battles in which we take direct control of units. Earlier bombardment of enemy positions will reduce their resistance, and intelligent deployment of other troops will allow you to reach out for their help.

PlayStation Universe: 8 / 10 by John-Paul Jones

Though Company of Heroes 3 might lack some polish and its implementation of a console-friendly control system takes a good while to get used to, Relic Entertainment has nonetheless crafted a layered World War II RTS that combines meaningful tactical choices and consequences with compelling street-level strategy that just begs to be revisited time and again. Armchair generals should rejoice.

GamesBeat: 4.5 / 5 by Dean Takahashi

As I noted in an earlier preview, whether I was fighting against humans or the computer AI, I never got the sense that war was too easy and my opponent was too easy to be. And so there was always a cost to fighting, and that’s the way it should be.

Inverse: 8 / 10 by Hayes Madsen

The core gameplay of Company of Heroes has never felt better, and there are hours upon hours of fun to be had simply blasting your way through other players or teaming up against AI opponents. The dual campaigns are honestly a bit of a letdown, but I’m hopeful things could be streamlined or improved with future patches and updates. The RTS genre has undoubtedly been in a slump over the last decade, but Company of Heroes 3 might be just the shot in the arm it needs to keep going.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Graphics: Many users appreciate the game's graphics, noting that it looks nice and has a vibrant, cartoony aesthetic compared to previous entries. The details in unit models and environmental effects are highlighted positively.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Some players enjoy the core gameplay mechanics, including the strategic elements of positioning and unit roles. The introduction of new mechanics and the faster-paced gameplay are also seen as improvements.
  • Multiplayer Experience: For some, the multiplayer mode is engaging and offers a fresh experience with new mechanics and a different meta. It has been noted that the ranked matchmaking is faster and more competitive.
  • Campaign Elements: The campaign has its moments, particularly the North African campaign, which some players found enjoyable compared to the Italian campaign. The Total War-style map mechanic is also viewed as an interesting addition.

The main cons of the game

  • Balance Issues: A recurring complaint is the poor balance between factions, with many players feeling that certain factions (particularly Allies) are overpowered compared to others (notably Axis forces). This has led to frustration in both multiplayer and single-player modes.
  • Monetization and DLC: Users express dissatisfaction with the aggressive monetization strategy, particularly the pricing of DLCs and battlegroups, which some feel should have been included in the base game. Many players are frustrated with the pay-to-win aspect introduced by these DLCs.
  • Campaign Quality: The Italian campaign is criticized for being repetitive and lacking depth, with some players finding it boring. The campaign structure is seen as clunky and not as engaging as previous titles.
  • Technical Issues: Despite improvements, some users report bugs and technical problems, including issues with AI behavior, pathfinding, and crashes.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Content Variety: Players express disappointment over the limited number of factions and battlegroups available at launch and the slow rollout of additional content. There are calls for more significant expansions and the inclusion of factions like the Soviets or Italians.
  • Single-Player Experience: Many players miss the depth and richness of the campaigns found in previous installments, with calls for more engaging narratives and scenarios.
  • Community and Mod Support: Some users lament the lack of modding support and community-driven content compared to earlier games in the series, which had more robust modding capabilities.
  • Improved AI: There are also requests for better AI performance in both single-player and multiplayer modes, as the current AI behavior is considered subpar.

Summary

  • In summary, while Company of Heroes 3 has some appealing aspects, particularly in visuals and multiplayer mechanics, it faces significant criticism regarding balance, monetization practices, campaign depth, and technical issues. Many users suggest waiting for discounts or future updates before fully committing to the game.
