Company of Heroes for PC is a real-time strategy created by the makers of Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War and Homeworld series. The game relates to the World War II as a whole, but its main focus is the American struggle against Germans in the western part of Europe.

Gameplay

In Company of Heroes for PC, the singleplayer campaign scenario opens during the allied air and sea landing in Normandy on the memorable D-Day. The campaign unfolds as a good feature film presenting the heroes from the company mentioned in the title. As for the multiplayer (online, LAN), up to eight players can enjoy the game together, each of them joining either the Allied Forces or the Germans. Plenty of in-game locations and weapons are based on the authentic places and models.

Expansion

April 7, 2009

Strategy

The second standalone expansion to the popular war RTS from Relic Entertainment, released in Poland under the name Kompania Braci. Along with the expansion we get three more campaigns set in key moments of World War II: Causeway, Battle of Falaise and Ace of Tigers. The most noteworthy campaign is the one in which we take control over a single German tank with its four-man crew and a group of infantry covering it. Each of the tankers has a slightly different role, and the gameplay is a bit like a hybrid of strategy and RPG.

Expansion

Strategy

A standalone expansion to the bestselling war strategy game Company of Heroes by Relic Entertainment. The expansion enriches the basic version of the game with two brand new campaigns realized with a similar cinematic flair as the original. In the first of these we take part in the battles of Normandy and the Battle of Caen, taking command over the forces of the British 2nd Army. The second allows you to stand on the opposite side of the barricades and lead German armored units to victory during the famous Operation Market Garden.

  • Innovative Gameplay Mechanics: The game emphasizes tactical positioning, cover, and suppression, making each engagement feel dynamic and strategic. Players must manage smaller squads effectively rather than relying on sheer numbers.
  • Realistic Graphics and Sound Design: Despite its age, the visuals and audio still impress, with destructible environments and immersive soundscapes that enhance the overall experience.
  • Replayability: The inclusion of expansions and community mods adds variety and extends the game's longevity, offering different factions and gameplay styles.

The main cons of the game

  • Aging Graphics and UI: While still playable, some elements feel outdated, and managing large armies can be cumbersome compared to modern standards.
  • Limited Faction Variety: The base game only features Allies vs. Axis, which can limit long-term replayability compared to later entries or expansions.
  • Technical Issues: Many users report crashes, bugs, and difficulties launching the game, particularly in the Legacy Edition.
  • Clunky Pathfinding and AI: Players have noted inconsistent AI behavior and pathfinding issues, especially in complex urban environments.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Camera Control: Some users found the camera limitations frustrating and wished for better zoom and control options.
  • Enhanced AI and Unit Behavior: Many reviews mentioned that the AI could be predictable and that unit commands felt overly manual, leading to frustration during gameplay.
  • More Campaign Content: Some players felt the base game was limited in campaign missions and desired more content without needing to purchase additional DLCs.

Summary

  • Overall, Company of Heroes - Legacy Edition is celebrated as a classic RTS that has stood the test of time, but it does come with its share of drawbacks, particularly related to technical performance and the limitations of its original design.
