A metroidvania with adventure elements, made by the creators of the point&click adventure game Truberbrook. In Constance, we assume the role of a female painter descending into madness. We explore the locations created by her mind, using brushes and paint as weapons.
After the warmly received Truberbrook was released in 2019, the studio btf games, operating under the umbrella of the German company bildundtonfabrik (also known as btf) firmly established itself in the video game industry. Over time, its portfolio was expanded by productions such as The Berlin Apartment and the metroidvania titled Constance described here.
In Constance events are viewed from the side. This is a platforming action game with adventure elements, where we play as a painter descending into madness, seeking a way out of a world created by her mind.
During the game we jump across platforms, avoid traps, and navigate environmental obstacles, as well as deal with opponents. Each of these mechanics is tied to paint, and the brush wielded by the protagonist allows her to gain momentum in the air or extend her jumps. Additionally, the painting tools serve Constance as weapons used in battles against regular enemies and much stronger bosses. There are also puzzles waiting to be solved.
We must be cautious, as using painting techniques gradually damages the paint of the main character. Allowing it to become completely contaminated results in negative effects being applied to the protagonist. Death also has consequences - after we die we decide whether we want to start from a checkpoint or pay a price to continue from the point of failure.
On the other hand, as Constance progresses, she finds inspirations that allow her to create sketches in her journal, granting her access to upgrades and ability modifications. These enable her to face increasingly greater challenges over time. The adventure takes her through various interconnected locations, whose appearance is linked to the protagonist's mental health and her history.
The graphic design of Constance is maintained in a cartoon style.

Game Ratings for Constance Video Game.
Loot Level Chill: 8 / 10 by Mick Fraser
Although it never really does anything we haven’t seen before, Constance is well-made enough to be worthy of your time, and does enough to earn its place in a crowded genre.
WayTooManyGames: 9.5 / 10 by Oliver Shellding
A game that makes me feel like I’m getting better, while telling a story about a human aspect, and delivering whimsy, humor and prestige. I couldn’t have been happier, and now I’m hoping for a console port so I can play this on my Switch again next year.
The Punished Backlog: 7.3 / 10 by David Silbert
Constance is a game that’s tragically at odds with itself. Its story feels like a warm blanket, but its boss battles are a trial by fire. Its world is vibrant, but its map is cumbersome. Perhaps that’s the point — that finding solace takes pain, perseverance, and self-determination. I can respect the vision, but I’m just not sure the final product did that vision justice. I admire the effort put into Constance and commend bildundtonfabrik for treating the mental health crisis with the care and compassion it deserves. If ever the team created a sequel, this canvas could really take flight. As is, Constance is a good oeuvre that could’ve been great.
