Crusader Kings III: Legends of the Dead is an expansion to the grand strategy type RTS released in 2020 titled Crusader Kings III. The DLC was developed by the authors of the original, namely the team specialized in this genre, Paradox Development Studio.

Mechanics

Crusader Kings III: Legends of the Dead is based on two pillars, the first of which is the royal legacy. The expansion allows us to make our name famous by commissioning the writing of songs of praise about us, employing chroniclers who will write about us in their books, and hiring poets and bards to decorate the feasts we organize with the songs they composed.

The status of a living legend is important because it gives us access to elite buildings that prove our greatness, as well as to decisions that we could not make as an "ordinary" ruler. Furthermore, our successors may use our great deeds to justify their right to exercise power.

The main pros of the game

  • Increased Disease Impact: The addition of plagues makes diseases more dangerous and unpredictable, adding a layer of realism and urgency to gameplay.
  • Dynastic Pruning: The plague mechanics can help manage bloated dynasties by eliminating excess heirs, which can be seen as a relief for players.
  • Immersive Visuals: The map-based visuals of epidemics convey tension effectively, enhancing the game's atmosphere.
  • Role-Playing Opportunities: The legend system allows for some unique storytelling and role-playing elements, where players can curate their ruler's mythology.
  • Burial and Mourning Events: These features add emotional depth and flavor to the game, allowing players to honor deceased characters.

The main cons of the game

  • Event Spam: Users report overwhelming notification spam related to plagues and legends, leading to frustration and a cluttered interface.
  • Shallow Epidemic Management: The choices in managing illnesses often feel repetitive and lack meaningful depth, reducing player engagement.
  • Lack of Legacy from Legends: Despite the effort and resources spent on creating legends, there are no lasting benefits or traits passed down to heirs, making the system feel underwhelming.
  • Generic and Transactional Legends: The legend mechanics are perceived as bland and overly focused on resource expenditure without significant impact on gameplay.
  • Clunky UI: Users have criticized the user interface for being cumbersome, particularly in managing the new systems introduced.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Deeper Legacy Mechanics: Players expected more meaningful outcomes from the legend system, such as traits or titles that would persist through generations.
  • More Engaging Epidemic Interactions: There is a desire for more interactive and varied responses to plagues, rather than repetitive choices that lack dramatic tension.
  • Unique Storytelling Events: Users expressed a wish for events tied directly to the legends that would add narrative depth and player agency.
  • Improved UI/UX: Many reviews called for a more streamlined interface for managing legends and epidemics, as the current setup feels clunky and unintuitive.
  • Expanded Plague Variety: Some players hoped for a wider range of diseases with unique mechanics, rather than just more frequent occurrences of existing ones.

Summary

  • Overall, while Legends of the Dead introduces intriguing concepts, it appears to struggle with execution, leading to mixed reviews from users who feel the DLC does not fully live up to its potential or price point.
