In 2019, Team Ninja studio and Koei Tecmo put into the hands of players a brawler titled Dead or Alive 6, being the sixth installment of a series developed since 1996 (its first part was released on arcade machines two years before its release on PlayStation). Over time, it lived to see an expanded, definitive version, in the form of Dead or Alive 6: Last Round, described here.

Content

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round includes all characters from the basic version of the game, as well as additional ones, such as Nyotengu, Phase 4, Momiji, Rachel and Tamaki. Also implemented here are bonus costumes linked to other titles in the Team Ninja portfolio, such as Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge and Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation. In addition, there's a photo mode waiting to be checked out, where players can capture male and female warriors in various poses and settings.

Dead or Alive 6, while providing a few features a modern fighting game should have, also disappointingly leaves out many important elements, offers very little new content, and forces returning players to purchase the title again. As such, while the title is a solid new release, it's only recommended to new players who don't mind the missing features.

The main pros of the game

  • Gameplay Quality: Many users still enjoy the core gameplay mechanics of DOA6, appreciating the fast-paced nature and unique hold system that rewards players for reading opponents.
  • New Photo Mode: The addition of a photo mode allows players to capture in-game moments, which some users find appealing.
  • Improved Graphics: Some graphical enhancements, particularly the new lighting system on one stage, received positive mentions.
  • Full Roster for New Players: New players benefit from having a full roster of characters available from the start, including several previously paid DLC characters.

The main cons of the game

  • Cash Grab Accusations: A significant number of reviews describe the game as a blatant cash grab, with many feeling that it offers little new content compared to the original DOA6.
  • No Transfer of Paid Characters: Players who previously purchased characters in DOA6 are frustrated that they must pay again for characters like Mai and Kula, leading to feelings of disrespect from the developers.
  • Lack of New Content: Users express disappointment over the absence of new characters, stages, or game modes, with many stating that it feels like a minimal update rather than a new game.
  • Poor Online Features: The game lacks rollback netcode and crossplay, which many players consider essential for a modern fighting game, especially in 2026.
  • Increased DLC Prices: The cost of unlocking characters and costumes has reportedly increased compared to the original game, further frustrating returning players.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Rollback Netcode: Many players emphasize the need for rollback netcode to improve online play, which is seen as a standard for modern fighting games.
  • Crossplay: The absence of crossplay is noted as a significant drawback, limiting the player base and online matchmaking.
  • New Game Modes: Users express disappointment over the lack of traditional modes like Tag Battle, which have been staples in previous entries.
  • Balance Changes and Improvements: Players were hoping for adjustments to character balance and gameplay mechanics, which did not occur, leaving the game feeling stagnant.
  • More Stages with Visual Upgrades: While one stage received visual enhancements, players expected more stages to be updated in a similar manner.
  • Comprehensive DLC Transfer: Many users wanted a more generous approach to transferring DLC content from the original game, rather than having to repurchase items they already owned.

Summary

  • Overall, while the gameplay remains fun for some, the overwhelming sentiment is that the release feels exploitative towards loyal fans of the series, with many calling for a more respectful treatment of the franchise in future titles.
