In 2019, Team Ninja studio and Koei Tecmo put into the hands of players a brawler titled Dead or Alive 6, being the sixth installment of a series developed since 1996 (its first part was released on arcade machines two years before its release on PlayStation). Over time, it lived to see an expanded, definitive version, in the form of Dead or Alive 6: Last Round, described here.

Content

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round includes all characters from the basic version of the game, as well as additional ones, such as Nyotengu, Phase 4, Momiji, Rachel and Tamaki. Also implemented here are bonus costumes linked to other titles in the Team Ninja portfolio, such as Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge and Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation. In addition, there's a photo mode waiting to be checked out, where players can capture male and female warriors in various poses and settings.

But for a fan of the original DEAD OR ALIVE 6, this is a good pack only if you want almost all DLC in a single place, along with the promise of new, free content down the line.

Push Square: 4 / 10 by Sammy Barker

This should have been a more generous bundle, with all content included, a tag-team mode, and rollback netcode. Instead it’s a cash grab with scant new features to justify its inexplicable existence.

IGN: 6 / 10 by Will Borger

Dead or Alive 6 Last Round is a great fighting game wrapped up in a very bad package, with everything that made it special in 2019 still holding up today but little to justify why this re-release wasn't just another DLC pack.

The main pros of the game

  • Fun Gameplay: The core fighting mechanics remain enjoyable, with the unique hold system allowing for strategic play.
  • Visual Improvements: Some graphical enhancements, including better lighting for one stage (Oboro mode).
  • Photo Mode: The addition of a photo mode allows players to capture in-game moments.
  • Free Entry Point: Core Fighters offers a free version with four characters, making it accessible for new players to try the game without an upfront cost.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of New Content: The game is essentially a re-release of DOA6 with minimal changes, lacking new characters, stages, or gameplay modes.
  • Monetization Issues: Players are required to repurchase characters and costumes they previously owned, with inflated prices for DLC.
  • No Rollback Netcode or Crossplay: The absence of modern online features, such as rollback netcode, has led to poor online experiences, including lag and disconnections.
  • Performance Issues: Reports of input lag, stuttering, and other gameplay performance problems have been common.
  • Delisted Original: The original DOA6 has been delisted, forcing players to buy this version if they want to continue playing.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • No Tag Battle Mode: A popular mode present in previous titles is missing.
  • No Balance Changes: Players expected updates to character balance, which were not implemented.
  • No Significant Gameplay Changes: Many users noted that the game feels the same as the original DOA6, with no new mechanics or systems introduced.
  • Limited Visual Enhancements: While there were some improvements, users felt they were not substantial enough to justify the release as a new game.
  • Communication and Transparency: A lack of clear communication from the developers regarding future updates and content has left players feeling frustrated and uncertain.

Summary

  • Overall, while the game retains the fun fighting mechanics that fans enjoy, it has been criticized heavily for its perceived lack of effort in providing new content and for its monetization strategies, leading to disappointment among existing players.
