Mortal Kombat 1 is a new installment in the bestselling series of violent fighting games originating from 1992. It was first created by American studio Midway Games (and since 2009 was taken over by NetherRealm), also responsible for other games such as Injustice. To this day, the company oversees the Mortal Kombat franchise, this game being its twelfth main installment. The game was announced for PC, PS5, Xbox S/X and Nintendo Switch, once again being published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

Plot

Mortal Kombat 1 is set in its reborn universe created by Fire God Liu Kang. The well-known kombatants enter a new era, free to decide whether to join forces or oppose each other once again. Even in this new reality, however, one thing stays certain: there's always something worth fighting for.

Would-be Reboot Brings Little Novelty. We Played Mortal Kombat 1

Is NetherRealm resetting its flagship series with Mortal Kombat 1? Only in terms of marketing and, somewhat, narratively. The fighting game does not dramatically change its face and in terms of gameplay, it rather sticks to the guns.

Destructoid: 8 / 10 by Steven Mills

Even though Mortal Kombat 1 is no Flawless Victory, it still feels like a step forward for the franchise. The core gameplay is the best it’s ever been, which I think is the most important thing for the genre.

The main pros of the game

  • Graphics and Presentation: The game features stunning visuals and well-designed characters, with many players praising the art style and graphical fidelity.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The core combat mechanics are generally well-received, with many finding the gameplay enjoyable and the new Kameo system offering interesting combo opportunities.
  • Story Mode: The story, while polarizing, has moments that fans appreciate, especially in its exploration of character backstories and new timelines.
  • Character Roster: The inclusion of guest characters like Omni-Man and Ghostface is seen as a highlight, adding variety to the roster.
  • Fun Factor: Many players find the game enjoyable, especially in multiplayer settings, and appreciate the nostalgic elements of the franchise.

The main cons of the game

  • File Size: The game's massive file size (over 150GB) is frequently criticized, with many players feeling it is excessive for a fighting game.
  • Microtransactions: There is significant discontent regarding the monetization practices, including the high costs of DLC characters and the prevalence of paywalls for skins and content.
  • Balancing Issues: Some characters and mechanics, particularly related to the Kameo system, have been described as unbalanced, leading to frustration in competitive play.
  • Lack of Content: Players note a lack of single-player modes and customization options compared to previous titles, with some missing features like the Krypt.
  • Story Quality: While some enjoy the story, others find it poorly executed, especially in the second half, leading to disappointment.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Krypt Mode: Many players expressed a desire for the return of the Krypt mode, which provided a more engaging way to unlock content compared to the current Invasions mode.
  • Character Variety: Several reviews mention the absence of classic Mortal Kombat characters such as Sonya, Jax, and Nightwolf, which diminishes the nostalgia factor for longtime fans.
  • More Customization Options: Users feel that character customization is lacking compared to previous games, with limited options for altering character appearances.
  • Offline Content: The need for an internet connection for certain offline modes and the overall lack of robust solo content has been a point of contention.
  • Improved Game Mechanics: Some players desire a return to the simpler mechanics of earlier games, expressing that the new Kameo system complicates gameplay unnecessarily.

Summary

  • Overall, while Mortal Kombat 1 has its share of strengths, particularly in graphics and core gameplay, it faces significant criticism regarding its monetization strategies, content availability, and gameplay balance. Many players recommend waiting for sales before purchasing due to the high initial price and additional costs for DLC.
