Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a jRPG belonging to the Digimon series, specifically - the sixth installment of the Digimon Story sub-series, which started in 2006 on the Nintendo DS handheld. The game was developed by the Media.Vision studio, while its release was handled by Bandai Namco Entertainment - a company overseeing the brand.

Gameplay

Digimon Story: Time Stranger does not deviate in terms of mechanics from what the previous parts of the series, led by Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, have accustomed us to.

Adventure in two worlds

We follow the action from a third-person perspective (TPP), and during the game we explore both Tokyo and the digital world called Iliad, inhabited by the titular creatures - Digimon. Along the way, we get to know the inhabitants of both realities, perform quests and engage in fights with opponents.

Turn-based battles and using the Digimon

The fights take place in turn-based mode, and we put the titular creatures into them. Every Digimon has a unique set of skills, attacks, as well as strengths and weaknesses, the skillful use of which on the battlefield is key to victory. Given that up to three Digimon can be on the battlefield at the same time, it is worth ensuring that the individual monsters complement each other, and their attacks can be linked into various combinations.

Checkpoint Gaming: 7.5 / 10

Despite this, these are fairly minor bumps in the road that I just wish had played out a little differently. Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a “more than the sum of its parts” RPG if I’ve ever seen one. Its rough parts are worth it if only for the butterfly effect it’ll have on future games in the series. It’s damn good eating for Digimon fans.

Impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash. Digimon Story: Time Stranger is probably one of the best Digimon games around

Netto’s Game Room: by Catherine Tran

This game is utterly fantastic. I went into it thinking that if it was even half as good as Cyber Sleuth, it would be amazing, but aside from my distaste for launch-DLC locking quests behind it, and the fact that I like the characters a bit better in Cyber Sleuth, this game exceeds it in every way. The story is great, the world feels alive, the visuals are vastly improved, and it has a lot of quality-of-life improvements that previous entries in the series lack. It's extremely approachable whether you're a longtime Digimon fan, or entirely new to the franchise, and it manages to be challenging at times throughout(unless you go overboard on grinding, which you definitely can if you want an easier experience). This is the definitive Digimon game, and I cannot recommend it enough.

  • Visuals and Animation: Players praise the graphics and animations, highlighting the vibrant design of the Digital World and the fluidity of the Digimon's movements during battles.
  • Digimon Variety: The game features a large roster of over 450 Digimon, allowing for extensive customization and team-building strategies.

  • Nostalgic Elements: The game captures the essence of the Digimon franchise, appealing to long-time fans with familiar themes and references.

The main cons of the game

  • DLC Practices: Many reviews express dissatisfaction with the DLC model, particularly the inclusion of essential content (like grinding dungeons) that is not part of the Ultimate Edition, leading to accusations of predatory pricing.
  • Story and Character Development: While some find the story engaging, others criticize it for being clichéd and poorly paced, with a protagonist that feels irrelevant.
  • Repetitive Environments: Users mention a lack of exploration and linearity in the game design, with many areas feeling reused or lacking in depth.
  • Minor Bugs and Technical Issues: A few players reported bugs, such as save file corruption and issues with the game engine, which detracted from their overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Digifarm Management: Players desire better quality-of-life features for managing Digimon in the Digifarm, including easier access to digivolution information and bulk feeding options.
  • More Depth in Side Quests: Many reviews indicate that side quests are mostly fetch quests, lacking variety and engagement, which diminishes the overall experience.
  • Character Development: Users noted a lack of depth in character interactions and world-building, with many NPCs feeling underdeveloped.
  • Open World Exploration: A desire for a more open-world experience rather than the linear progression that the game offers was expressed, as players seek more freedom to explore the Digital World.

Summary

  • In summary, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is seen as a significant improvement over previous titles in terms of gameplay and visuals, but it suffers from issues related to DLC practices, story depth, and environmental design. Players recommend it primarily for fans of the franchise, while cautioning potential buyers about its pricing and content model.
