Resurrection of Evil is the first official expansion pack for Doom 3. It was developed by Nerve Software and id Software (as a consultant). It turns out that defeating the Cyberdemon and destroying the portal leading to Hell is not enough to solve the problems of the secret base belonging to the Union Aerospace Corporation and located on Mars. Assuming the role of a nameless commando wearing a green armor, the player's task is to kill the main culprit called Malcolm Betruger, exterminating hordes of monsters along the way, once again.

Mechanics

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil for PC and XBX offers new levels, several new enemies and two fancy additions to the weaponry: the classic, double-barreled shotgun and Ionized Plasma Levitator, otherwise known as the Grabber. The latter allows to control different objects scattered throughout levels. The player also has an ancient artifact at their disposal - this allows to slow down the passage of time, increase the amount of damage dealt with fists, as well as to become immortal for a short period of time.

However, over the years, developers such as Midway Games and Nerve Software have also been involved in its development. Although the series made its debut on PC, over time it was also released on consoles, as well as on mobile devices.

The main pros of the game

  • Enhanced Combat: Many players appreciate the faster-paced combat compared to the original DOOM 3, making it feel more action-oriented and enjoyable.
  • New Weapons: The introduction of the double-barreled shotgun and the Grabber Gun is widely praised. The Super Shotgun, in particular, is noted for its power and effectiveness in combat.
  • New Enemies: The expansion adds new enemies, such as Hazmat Zombies and Vulgars, which contribute to a fresh experience.
  • Atmosphere: The game retains the dark and oppressive atmosphere that fans loved in the original DOOM 3, with some new locations that enhance the overall experience.
  • Shorter Campaign: Some players prefer the shorter length of the expansion, finding it more engaging without the drawn-out pacing of the base game.
  • Fun Gameplay Mechanics: The Artifact, which grants various powers, adds a new layer of strategy and fun to combat.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Length: Several reviewers mention that the game is quite short, with some completing it in just a few hours, which may leave players wanting more content.
  • Overpowered Mechanics: The Artifact's abilities, while fun, are considered overpowered by some players, leading to trivialized combat encounters and a loss of the original game's tension.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some users feel that the gameplay can become repetitive, especially with the reliance on the Artifact and the lack of diverse enemy encounters.
  • Lack of Narrative Depth: The expansion does not significantly develop the story or worldbuilding, which some players found lacking compared to the original DOOM 3.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Variety in Levels: Players expressed a desire for more diverse level designs, as many levels felt similar or recycled from the base game.
  • Increased Challenge: While some enjoyed the new weapons and powers, others felt that the game could have benefited from a more balanced difficulty curve that maintained the horror elements.
  • Localization Issues: Some players noted the absence of audio in languages other than English, which detracted from their experience.
  • Less Emphasis on Horror: A few users mentioned that the expansion leans more towards action than horror, which may not appeal to fans of the original game's atmosphere.

Summary

  • Overall, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil is generally viewed as a solid expansion that enhances the original game with new mechanics and faster-paced gameplay, though it has its share of criticisms regarding length, balance, and narrative depth.
