Another full-fledged installment in the popular series of third-person perspective action games with tactical features. The series is developed by the Japanese studio Omega Force. The story of Dynasty Warriors 9 is loosely based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms that describes the Chinese civil war that occurred during the 2nd and 3rd century.
Dynasty Warriors 9 is another installment of the popular series of action games with tactical features. Similarly to its predecessors, it was developed by Omega Force. The title was released on PC, PS4 and XONE during the fifteenth anniversary of the series. The developers decided to celebrate that by introducing many novelties and improvements to the gameplay mechanics.
Plot
The story told in Dynasty Warriors 9 for PC, PS4 and XONE is loosely based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which depicts the civil war that took place in China during the second and third century. The player can choose from a variety of different characters – 83 characters known from Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires and some new ones. Among them there are warriors known from other games created by this studio, including Yellow Turban’s general Zhou Cang, who appeared in the novel by Luo Guanzhong mentioned above and in the Musou Stars game.
Mechanics
The mainstay of Dynasty Warriors 9 for PC, PS4 and XONE is real-time battles with hundreds of participants. Before the battle the player can make a few tactical decisions and then he can join the battlefield where he slashes enemies side by side with the army he leads. The combat system was greatly changed compared to previous entries in the series. However, the key to eliminating hordes of enemies lies in properly using available weapons and special skills that vary depending on the controlled character. More powerful skills and attacks are unlocked by gaining experience.
Contrary to the previous installments that took place on closed, flat levels, Dynasty Warriors 9 offers a large, open world that covers a digital rendition of the whole China. The sandbox that can be freely explored contains historical cities and varied topography that enables the player to use different tactics – difference in height can provide tactical advantage for one of the armies.
Technical aspects
Dynasty Warriors 9 for PC, PS4 and XONE uses the same technology as the previous entries in the series. However, the graphics engine was improved and the three-dimensional graphics are of high quality while maintaining a constant frame rate.

Admittedly, many of the flaws or problems I have with Dynasty Warriors 9 are nothing entirely new to the series. It's just that now there's a whole new layer of problems that have been put on top of them that make the original issues that much more apparent. For almost every aspect of the game's features that I felt were on par with the quality of past titles, there is a contradiction.

Dynasty Warriors 9 still has the 'levelling hundreds of dudes without breaking a sweat' core loop so you feel like a badass, but the open world removes some of the depth. Fans can still enjoy, but it won't win any new hearts this time.

As it stands, though, Dynasty Warriors 9 is more of a foundation for the next title than the dawning of a new era for the franchise. That's perfectly acceptable, too, given that series like Dynasty Warriors inevitably must evolve to stay relevant. Right now, there are just some growing pains, and anyone who was interested in the newest iteration because of its new gameplay features would do better waiting for the next one instead.
