Earth Defense Force 6 is the sixth main installment in a series of third-person shooters, originating with 2003's Monster Attack on the PlayStation 2. It was developed by Sandlot, just like the rest of the series.

Plot

Earth Defense Force 6 is set after the fifth game. As a result of the most recent, devastating world, 90 percent of Earth's population perished. The survivors try to rebuild their old society and civilization while still facing the threat of cosmic invaders.

In 2027, the aliens are still here, still attacking cities. Their numbers are constantly growing, posing an even greater threat. Humanity's left with no choice but to fight once again.

The main pros of the game

  • Co-op Gameplay: Players highlight the fun and chaotic experience of playing with friends, emphasizing that the game shines in multiplayer modes.
  • Enemy Variety: Many players appreciate the introduction of new enemies with unique mechanics, which adds depth to the gameplay.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Changes such as additional equipment slots for classes and better balancing of weapons were well-received.
  • Humorous and Campy Story: The absurdity of the story and dialogue is seen as a charm, maintaining the franchise's B-movie vibe.
  • Large Mission Count: The game offers a significant number of missions, providing ample content for players.
  • Enhanced Class Mechanics: Each class has received improvements, making them feel more distinct and fun to play.

The main cons of the game

  • Repetitive Missions: A significant number of missions are recycled from EDF5, often leading to a feeling of monotony, particularly due to the time travel narrative that forces players to replay similar missions.
  • Technical Issues: Users report numerous bugs, including crashes, desync issues in multiplayer, and problems with AMD graphics cards. These technical flaws detract from the overall experience.
  • Balancing Problems: Many weapons are considered ineffective, and some classes, like the Air Raider and Wing Diver, are seen as underpowered or limited in certain missions.
  • Poor Final Boss: The final boss fight is frequently criticized for being unsatisfying and tedious.
  • Lack of Innovation: Some players feel that the game does not offer enough new content to justify its price, likening it more to an expansion than a standalone title.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Better Weapon Balancing: Users express a desire for more viable weapons and better class differentiation, especially for the Air Raider and Wing Diver.
  • Improved Mission Design: Players want more unique and engaging mission structures rather than repetitive tasks that feel like filler.
  • Skip Dialogue Options: Many reviewers call for the ability to skip unskippable dialogue and cutscenes, especially during repeated missions.
  • Enhanced Graphics and Performance: There are calls for better optimization, including graphical enhancements and smoother performance across all platforms.
  • Local Play Options: Some players wish for more robust local co-op features, as the game currently emphasizes online play.

Summary

  • In summary, while EDF6 has many enjoyable elements, particularly in co-op play and enemy variety, it suffers from technical issues, repetitive content, and balancing problems that hinder its overall reception. Players recommend it for existing fans but caution potential newcomers to consider previous titles first.
