Although graphics based on ASCII code (text symbols) may seem like a relic of the distant past of the video game industry, from time to time there are developers who use it in their works. Among them is independent creator Andrei Fomin, who is behind the Effulgence RPG project described here.

Gameplay

Effulgence RPG takes us to a futuristic universe where everything is made of colorful letters, numbers, and various symbols.

A strange world

We watch the action from the side and lead a team of characters, exploring this strange world. It is presented in the form of a globe divided into locations, including battle zones, event places, and even shops. During the adventure, we meet its inhabitants and explore its mysteries, and above all, we engage in battles with opponents.

Turn-based battles

On our path, we encounter both regular enemies and powerful bosses, and the battles with them are conducted in a turn-based mode. We must skillfully utilize the strengths of our subordinates and efficiently juggle the available attacks and skills. Among the so-called "tactical cartridges," we find area attacks, shields protecting us from damage, and all kinds of special effects.

Enemies as a way to get resources

Overcoming enemies plays a crucial role here, as eliminating a target results in breaking it down into particles that power the matter printer. This allows us to create increasingly powerful weapons, useful gadgets, and various mechanisms. Interestingly, this option is also available during combat, and making proper use of it can often save our skin.

Game length and replayability

Effulgence RPG is designed to allow for multiple playthroughs. Completing a single playthrough takes between 3 to 5 hours.
