Gris

Existensis is an artistic adventure game with platform game elements in which we direct an artist looking for inspiration. It is another computer game created by American artist Ozzie Sneddon after, among others, The Eigengrau Menagerie from 2015. This time the developer abandoned the point'n'click game convention, but in other aspects Existensis has a lot in common with its predecessor.

Plot

The main character of Existensis is an artist who wants to create an eternal work: a tower representing the "journey of life". Unfortunately, Major (this is the pseudonym of the artist) is unable to realize his vision - none of the projects gets his approval. Resigned, the protagonist goes on an artistic pilgrimage around the world of Eré in search of inspiration.

Mechanics

Existensis is a game focused on experiencing the creator's artistic vision, just like Gris released years before. So we get a beautiful, colorful and hand-drawn world to explore, and the platforming gameplay and logic puzzles are more of an excuse to explore its wonders than the main attraction of the game. However, while Gris doesn't feature any dialogue or NPCs, Eré is populated by a host of colorful and unusual characters with plenty to say. For example, about the world, which is not just a metaphor here - it has its own and quite rich history.

Ozzie Sneddon's second game stands out for its non-linear gameplay. The story, though short, can branch out in many places, eventually leading to one of many endings. Experiencing all of them is easy, because - like in similar indie games - there are no enemies, death or time limits in Existensis. The game is a purely recreational experience, allowing players to explore the secrets of Eré in a stress-free manner.

Technical aspects

The entire 2D visuals of Existensis are hand-drawn by Ozzie Snedden. The game features 15 diverse locations, from colorful cities and huge libraries, to secret settlements hidden in ancient forests, to ashen deserts. In terms of graphics, the game may be a bit different from the renowned indie games such as Hollow Knight or the Ori series, but it makes up for it with its unique style, thus encouraging you to continue your expeditions into the world of Eré.
