Fatal Frame (also known as Zero in Japan, and Project Zero in Europe and Australia) is a survival horror series which started in 2001. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake described here represents a comprehensive refresh of the second installment of this series, released two years after the premiere of the original. The remake was prepared and published by Koei Tecmo, which oversees the brand.

New features in the remake

While working on Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, the developers revisited most elements of the original. The main focus was on the graphic design and the audio layer. They also focused on modernizing the controls and game's systems (including the mechanic of using Camera Obscura, which is our weapon in the fight against ghosts). Additionally, a mechanic of holding hands by the main characters was introduced.

If you like horror, specifically a quieter, more atmospheric horror, or prefer ghosts to other monsters, Crimson Butterfly Remake is absolutely your huckleberry.

Nintendo Life: 7 / 10 by Mitch Vogel

Fatal Frame 2 isn't quite the home run some may have hoped for, but it's an overall enjoyable and worthwhile experience that I'd suggest picking up at some point.

NintendoWorldReport: 8.5 / 10 by Joel DeWitte

Entrapping spirits with your Camera Obscura is a smart design choice that is unfortunately bogged down a little by marathon battles, but the impeccable audio design, visual horror, and the world built by the development team shows a genuine love of the horror genre and papers over what issues I may have with some of the action. The world exploration and story beats have impeccable pacing. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is a horror game for the horror movie fan, and this remake is the ideal way to experience it.

The main pros of the game

  • Visuals and Atmosphere: The remake features stunning graphics that enhance the eerie ambiance of Minakami Village, making it visually appealing and atmospheric.
  • Story and Lore: The narrative remains faithful to the original while expanding on character backstories and side quests, adding depth and emotional weight to the experience.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The inclusion of new camera mechanics, filters, and the ability to hold Mayu's hand to recover health adds new layers to the gameplay. The combat, while divisive, introduces a more dynamic and engaging experience.
  • Improved Exploration: Players appreciate the new areas and side stories that encourage exploration and add to the lore.

Summary

The main cons of the game

    • Combat System: The new combat mechanics are a major point of contention. Many players find the wraiths to be overly tanky, making battles feel tedious and drawn out. The introduction of a stamina system and the need to dodge adds complexity that some feel detracts from the original's tension.
    • Difficulty Balancing: Initial gameplay can feel punishing, with many players reporting frustration over the amount of damage wraiths can inflict and their health regeneration during fights.
    • Technical Issues: Some users report performance issues, including stuttering and a cap at 60 FPS, which they find disappointing for a modern release. There are also complaints regarding the game's handling of certain mechanics that feel inconsistent or poorly integrated.
    • Loss of Original Charm: Some players feel that the remake loses some of the original's horror elements, particularly the tension created by fixed camera angles and limited visibility.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

    • Difficulty Options: Several players express a desire for more customizable difficulty settings, particularly for combat, to better suit their play styles.
    • Original Combat Mechanics: Fans of the original game miss the simpler, more skill-based combat mechanics that emphasized timing and strategy over the current system's complexity.
    • FPS Options: Users want the ability to unlock the frame rate beyond 60 FPS to enhance performance, especially on high-end PCs.
    • Collectibles and Costumes: Some players mention the absence of certain original costumes and collectibles, which they feel would have added to the nostalgia and replayability.

    Summary

    • Overall, while the remake has been well-received for its visuals, story, and atmosphere, the changes to combat mechanics and some technical issues have led to mixed feelings among long-time fans of the franchise.
