Fatal Frame (also known as Zero in Japan, and Project Zero in Europe and Australia) is a survival horror series which started in 2001. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake described here represents a comprehensive refresh of the second installment of this series, released two years after the premiere of the original. The remake was prepared and published by Koei Tecmo, which oversees the brand.

New features in the remake

While working on Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, the developers revisited most elements of the original. The main focus was on the graphic design and the audio layer. They also focused on modernizing the controls and game's systems (including the mechanic of using Camera Obscura, which is our weapon in the fight against ghosts). Additionally, a mechanic of holding hands by the main characters was introduced.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake nails the story and visuals, yet repetitive, drawn-out Camera Obscura battles keep the remake from reaching its full potential.

Rectify Gaming: 8 / 10

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is easily one of the most terrifying horror games on the market. The Camera Obscura remains one of the coolest combat systems in gaming, but the movement and combat pacing still feel weirdly stuck in the early 2000s.

The main pros of the game

  • Visual and Audio Design: Many users praised the game's graphics, describing it as beautiful and atmospheric, effectively capturing the eerie essence of the original. The sound design also received high marks for enhancing the horror experience.
  • Story and Lore: The narrative remains faithful to the original, with some added depth through side stories and character backstories, which many players appreciated.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The introduction of new mechanics, such as holding Mayu's hand for health recovery, a stealth system, and the ability to upgrade the Camera Obscura with various filters, added a fresh twist to the gameplay.
  • Exploration and Side Stories: Players enjoyed the expanded areas and the side quests that provided additional context and lore, making the game feel more immersive.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Some features, like the ability to buy healing items at save points and the removal of certain cumbersome mechanics from the original, were well-received.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat System Changes: A significant number of players expressed frustration with the new combat mechanics. The introduction of a stamina bar, the need for precise timing and focal points, and the increased health of enemies made battles feel tedious and drawn out. Many felt that the combat had shifted from a survival horror focus to more of an action-oriented style, detracting from the tension and atmosphere.
  • Enemy Aggravation Mechanic: The mechanic where ghosts can become enraged and regenerate health was widely criticized as frustrating and unnecessary, leading to extended battles that many found tedious.
  • Performance Issues: Some players reported technical issues, including frame rate drops and stuttering, particularly during cutscenes, which detracted from the overall experience.
  • Difficulty Balance: The initial difficulty level was seen as harsh, especially in the early game, with some players feeling overwhelmed by the combat mechanics and enemy health.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Original Combat Feel: Many players wished for a return to the original combat mechanics that focused on timing and resource management, rather than the new, more complex system that felt less satisfying.
  • Customization Options: Some users expressed a desire for more options to customize gameplay, such as toggling the minimap or disabling certain features that detracted from the horror experience.
  • Classic Mode: A few players suggested a desire for a classic mode that would allow them to experience the game with the original mechanics intact, rather than the revamped systems introduced in the remake.

Summary

  • Overall, while the remake of *FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly* has received praise for its visuals, story, and some gameplay enhancements, it has also faced criticism for its new combat mechanics and balance issues, leaving some fans of the original feeling disappointed.
