Feral Blue is a hybrid game, combining solutions taken from action-adventure, RPG, and strategy games with arcade elements. Snowbird Game Studios is responsible for the development of the title - a team so far known mainly from Blood & Gold: Caribbean! and a series of turn-based strategies under the title Eador.

Story

Feral Blue tells an alternative version of history; the story of the game begins in 1699 when Earth fell victim to powerful sun flare that led to global warming on an unprecedented scale. As a result, ice caps on the poles melted, and the seas and oceans flooded gigantic stretches of land. The disaster, known as the Second Flood, led to the deaths of millions of people. Those who have survived were doomed to live on one of the hundreds of islands or sailing; one of these sailors is played by the player who gradually climbs up the career ladder, moving from a naval robber to an experienced captain and diplomat.

Mechanics

The gameplay in Feral Blue has us start with one ship and a small crew, and our goal is to build a naval empire and start a dynasty so that after the captain's death, the legacy can be take over by his descendant. As we travel across the ocean, we observe the action in isometric projection, like in Sid Meier's Pirates!. When it comes to battles, the camera presents their course from third-person perspective. During the battles, not only the skills of the crew and the weaponry of our ship (over which we take direct control) count, but also the choice of appropriate tactics.

The activities we undertake develop the capabilities of our captain and their crew members, making them better sailors. It is worth bearing in mind that each of our subordinates has their own needs, strengths, and weaknesses; if we do not take sufficient care of them, they may fall victim to an epidemic or even stir up a rebellion.

In addition, over time, we gain the means to build our own settlement, which we gradually turn into a real metropolis; its development depends both on diplomatic relations with other cities (if necessary, we can remove politicians who oppose us in a more or less sophisticated way) and on how we use our treasury.

Technical aspects

Feral Blue uses the Unreal Engine 4 technology, so the visuals are at a decent level. Particularly noteworthy are the detailed ship models and realistically rendered water, as well as the effects of sea battles and, last but not least, changing weather conditions, such as violent storms.
