The remake of an iconic 2001 RPG, developed by Alkimia Interactive studio, a subsidiary of THQ Nordic. Compared to the original game, the Gothic Remake features fully revamped gameplay mechanics and greatly improved graphics thanks to using Unreal Engine 5.
Gothic is a remake of the RPG game of the same title released in 2001. While the original was the work of the German studio Piranha Bytes, the remake was developed by the Spanish team Alkimia Interactive (originally THQ Nordic Barcelona Studio), founded by THQ Nordic, which acquired the rights to the brand in 2019.
Gothic takes us to the fantasy kingdom of Myrtana, whose ruler - Rhobar II - created a penal colony on the island of Khorinis. The convicts sent there have to work hard extracting ore in the so-called Mine Valley. To prevent prisoners from escaping, the mages created a barrier that could only be penetrated from the outside. The spell got out of control, and as a result, the dome eventually surrounded the entire area of the Mine Valley, imprisoning both the convicts and their guards, as well as the mages themselves... and the evil lurking in the land. Players take on the role of a nameless prisoner who has just arrived in the colony and soon turns out to be destined for much greater feats than working in a mine.
In Gothic the action is shown from a third-person perspective (TPP). The game offers a rather small open world in which we can find camps founded by ore diggers, mines, an orc village and numerous ruins. The story told is somewhat non-linear - the player can decide which faction to join. It can affect the course of the main plot. In addition to quests pushing the story forward, various side missions are waiting to be completed.
The game world is not a safe place, and in addition to hostile convicts, there are also monsters. Although initially we mainly face representatives of the local fauna (such as wolves, large beetles or scavengers), over time we confront increasingly stronger opponents (like skeletons, orcs and demons). The battles are dynamic, and during them we can make use of both melee weapons (one- and two-handed swords, axes, hammers) and ranged weapons (crossbows, bows), as well as offensive and defensive magic.
As we progress, we gain experience points and, by advancing to the next levels, we gradually increase our combat potential with the help of teachers scattered around the game world. In addition to combat skills, the unnamed protagonist has other abilities - for example, he can learn to sneak behind enemies, produce useful equipment, and also pick locks.
Compared to the original Gothic, the remake stands out due to a completely refreshed graphic design, which is thanks to the use of Unreal Engine 5 technology.

Alkimia has delivered a game that captures the strengths of its predecessor, led by a brilliantly constructed world and the brutal harshness of life in the Mining Valley. Defying contemporary trends, Gothic Remake doesn’t hold the player’s hand and rewards them with a great sense of satisfaction as they make progress. It’s just a shame that we’ve ended up with a game plagued by so many bugs.

Gothic 1 Remake really blossoms and shines once players get through the excruciatingly slow start, with the seemingly endless back-and-forth conversations and tasks. Whilst I do appreciate how heavily this game focuses on NPC interaction, and its importance in forming alliances, Gothic fails to make me care about any of these Old Camp Shadow thugs, Brotherhood of the Sleeper cultists, or New Camp Mercenaries. Diego is the only character that even comes close to being likeable. Gothic 1 Remake’s biggest achievement is to truly deliver that vintage gameplay experience to players. If you’re a big fan of old-school game design, minimal guidance, and unforgiving difficulty, then this game is for you. For players who have grown accustomed to modern quality of life features like fast travel and auto-saves, Gothic 1 Remake can feel rather frustrating. One of my personal pet peeves was the trainer-based progression system. I had to track down one of the many NPCs who can train me to level up a certain skill. Yes, I know I sound like I didn’t enjoy the game. On the contrary, it brought me back to my childhood, when games didn’t have guides, floating arrows pointing where you had to go next, or glowing objects that stood out so you knew which ones you could interact with. If you’re looking for that old-school feel, Gothic 1 Remake will not disappoint. Gothic 1 Remake gets the Thumb Culture Gold Award!
