Gothic is a remake of an RPG released in 2001 under the same title. While the original was the work of the German studio Piranha Bytes, the described game was developed by the Spanish team at Barcelona Studio, created by THQ Nordic, which from May 2019 holds the rights to the brand, and also owns the team at Piranha Bytes.
Gothic takes us to the fantasy kingdom of Myrtana, whose ruler - Rhobar II - created a penal colony on the island of Khorinis. The convicts sent there have to work hard to extract ore in the Valley of Mines. In order to prevent prisoners from escaping, the mages created a barrier that could only be penetrated from the outside. Unfortunately, spell got out of control and eventually the dome surrounded the whole area of the Valley of Mines, imprisoning both the convicts and guards, as well as the mages themselves together with an ancient evil lurking in the land. The players, on the other hand, take on the role of a nameless prisoner, who soon after crossing the barrier turns out to be made for much bigger things than working in a mine.
In Gothic, the action is shown from third-person perspective. The devs give us a limited open world, where we can find, among others, camps set up by ore diggers, mines, orc village and numerous ruins. The story is to some extent non-linear - the player can decide which faction to join, which influences the path the story will follow. In addition to the task of pushing the story forward, various side missions await completion.
The game world is not a safe place, and in addition to hostile convicts, various monsters are a threat. Although initially we deal mainly with representatives of the local fauna (such as wolves, beetles or scavengers), with time we face stronger and stronger opponents (such as skeletons, orcs and demons). Combat is dynamic and we can use both melee weapons (one and two-handed swords, axes, hammers) and ranged weapons (crossbows, bows) as well as offensive and defensive magic.
As we progress, we earn experience points and advance to higher levels, gradually increasing our combat potential with the help of teachers scattered around the game world. In addition to fighting skills, the nameless protagonist has other abilitiues - for example, he can learn to sneak past his enemies, craft useful equipment and open locks.
The remake of Gothic stands out thanks to completely refreshed visuals, which is due to the use of Unreal Engine 4. Valley of Mines is overgrown with lush vegetation, camps and building elements were enriched with numerous details, and the elements of the hero's equipment were redesigned with attention to detail. In addition, the plot is presented through cut-scenes using motion capture.
