Gothic is a remake of the RPG game of the same title released in 2001. While the original was the work of the German studio Piranha Bytes, the remake was developed by the Spanish team Alkimia Interactive (originally THQ Nordic Barcelona Studio), founded by THQ Nordic, which acquired the rights to the brand in 2019.

Plot

Gothic takes us to the fantasy kingdom of Myrtana, whose ruler - Rhobar II - created a penal colony on the island of Khorinis. The convicts sent there have to work hard extracting ore in the so-called Mine Valley. To prevent prisoners from escaping, the mages created a barrier that could only be penetrated from the outside. The spell got out of control, and as a result, the dome eventually surrounded the entire area of the Mine Valley, imprisoning both the convicts and their guards, as well as the mages themselves... and the evil lurking in the land. Players take on the role of a nameless prisoner who has just arrived in the colony and soon turns out to be destined for much greater feats than working in a mine.

With patches and patience, Gothic 1 Remake could become essential. Right now, it is a promising and frustrating experience in roughly equal measure.

Thumb Culture: 4 / 5

Gothic 1 Remake really blossoms and shines once players get through the excruciatingly slow start, with the seemingly endless back-and-forth conversations and tasks. Whilst I do appreciate how heavily this game focuses on NPC interaction, and its importance in forming alliances, Gothic fails to make me care about any of these Old Camp Shadow thugs, Brotherhood of the Sleeper cultists, or New Camp Mercenaries. Diego is the only character that even comes close to being likeable. Gothic 1 Remake’s biggest achievement is to truly deliver that vintage gameplay experience to players. If you’re a big fan of old-school game design, minimal guidance, and unforgiving difficulty, then this game is for you. For players who have grown accustomed to modern quality of life features like fast travel and auto-saves, Gothic 1 Remake can feel rather frustrating. One of my personal pet peeves was the trainer-based progression system. I had to track down one of the many NPCs who can train me to level up a certain skill. Yes, I know I sound like I didn’t enjoy the game. On the contrary, it brought me back to my childhood, when games didn’t have guides, floating arrows pointing where you had to go next, or glowing objects that stood out so you knew which ones you could interact with. If you’re looking for that old-school feel, Gothic 1 Remake will not disappoint. Gothic 1 Remake gets the Thumb Culture Gold Award!

Gameffine: 80 / 100 by Jay Krishnan

Gothic 1 Remake is everything a good remake should strive to be. It stays remarkably faithful to the spirit of the original while delivering meaningful improvements across nearly every aspect of the experience. Even its more drastic changes feel like natural extensions of the Gothic formula rather than unnecessary departures. Can it replace the original? That's a difficult question for me to answer objectively, as I have too much history with Classic. However, if you're new to the series, there is no better place to begin. What ultimately keeps the remake from true greatness are its technical shortcomings and the inherent challenges of balancing a single-player RPG. There are certainly areas where it could be refined further, but even in its current form, Gothic 1 Remake stands as one of the year's strongest releases and a worthy revival of a beloved classic.

The main pros of the game

  • Faithfulness to the Original: The remake retains the core essence of the original Gothic game, making it nostalgic for long-time fans while introducing modern graphics and mechanics.
  • Stunning Graphics: The game features impressive visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, enhancing the immersive experience of the Valley of the Mines.
  • Engaging Atmosphere: The atmosphere is described as dark, gritty, and alive, with a world that feels reactive and immersive.
  • Dynamic Open World: The game encourages exploration without hand-holding, rewarding players for their curiosity and attention to detail.
  • Improved Combat System: While still retaining some clunkiness, the combat is seen as more fluid and modernized, with new mechanics like climbing and diving.
  • Expanded Content: The remake includes new quests, characters, and story elements that enhance the original narrative.
  • Strong Soundtrack: The music has been reimagined and modernized while maintaining the nostalgic feel of the original.

The main cons of the game

  • Bugs and Technical Issues: Many players report game-breaking bugs, crashes, and performance issues that hinder the experience.
  • Lockpicking System: The new lockpicking mechanic is criticized for being overly complicated and time-consuming, detracting from the gameplay experience.
  • Inconsistent NPC Behavior: Some NPCs exhibit erratic behavior, leading to frustration during quests and interactions.
  • Voice Acting: The voice acting for the main character has received mixed reviews, with some feeling it lacks the emotional depth of the original.
  • Combat Mechanics: While improved, some players find the combat still lacks the satisfaction and responsiveness they expected, particularly in terms of hit detection and fluidity.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Depth in Story and Quests: Some players feel that certain storylines and characters from the original were not fully fleshed out in the remake.
  • Better Balancing: There are calls for improved balancing in terms of enemy difficulty and progression, especially for magic users.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Players have expressed a desire for features like a toggle for running instead of holding down a key and better inventory management systems.
  • More Consequences in Story Events: Some players noted that certain pivotal moments in the story lacked the weight and consequences they had in the original game.

Summary

  • In summary, Gothic 1 Remake has been well-received for its visual and atmospheric enhancements, as well as its faithfulness to the original game. However, it also faces criticism for technical issues, certain gameplay mechanics, and the depth of storytelling. Overall, it appeals to both fans of the original and new players looking for a challenging RPG experience.
