Grand Theft Auto is the first installment in the popular and controversial series of action games in which the players may abandon all moral norms and simply loot, steal and kill without any limits.

The action takes place in three big American metropolises: Miami (Vice City), New York (Liberty City) and San Fransico (San Andreas), where our job is to perform all sorts of tasks commissioned by the mafia bosses. At first, those are easy missions, such as stealing cars, but with our progress, measured in wealth and prestige, the difficulty level will increase, and so we will eventually take part in bank robberies, murders and other audacious crimes.

Our basic working tool is a car. It is essential to effectively move through the street and perform quick robberies, as well as getting away from the furious police. The car is our only "true friend", so we have to learn to drive it, take turns at high speed, use handbrake and make the most of all its capabilities.

Action

London 1969 is the official addition to Grand Theft Auto, which caused a great deal of controversy at the end of the nineties because of its subject matter. As it was the case in the original, here too we will play the role of a gangster, who by performing certain tasks (murders, thefts, etc.) will climb higher and higher in the criminal hierarchy.

  • Freedom of Exploration: The game allows players to explore three cities (Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City) with a high degree of freedom, engaging in various criminal activities.
  • Humor and Satire: The game features satirical humor and politically incorrect content that some players find amusing and reflective of its time.
  • Arcade-style Gameplay: The point-based progression system and the ability to create chaos in the city provide an engaging, albeit simple, gameplay loop.
  • Cultural Impact: As the first entry in the franchise, it laid the groundwork for future titles and influenced many other games in the genre.

The main cons of the game

  • Aging Mechanics: The game has not aged well, with clunky controls, poor graphics, and awkward camera movements that can induce nausea.
  • Lack of Save Functionality: Players cannot save their progress mid-level, leading to frustration when trying to complete missions, especially as the difficulty ramps up.
  • Compatibility Issues: Many users report difficulties running the game on modern systems (e.g., Windows 10 and 11), often requiring tweaks or third-party fixes to play.
  • Limited Mission Variety: Missions are often repetitive and lack depth, which can lead to boredom over time.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Storyline Depth: Players note the absence of a compelling narrative, which is a stark contrast to later entries in the series that offer rich storytelling.
  • Modern Quality of Life Features: The game lacks contemporary features such as in-game maps, mission retries, and more refined controls that are standard in newer games.
  • Graphical and Audio Upgrades: Many reviews mention the outdated graphics and sound quality, suggesting that modern enhancements could improve the experience significantly.
  • Save Options: Users express a desire for more flexible save options, as the current structure can be punishing and frustrating.

Summary
