Hearts of Iron IV: Gotterdammerung is the tenth major expansion for the grand strategy game released in 2016. The expansion was developed by the authors of the base version of the game, namely the Paradox Development Studio team. Its release was handled by Paradox Interactive, the company overseeing the brand.

Novelties in the DLC

Hearts of Iron IV: Gotterdammerung introduces alternative history content, allowing players to rewrite the history of Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Belgium. By developing industry, creating new technologies, as well as improving the army and conducting military operations, they can significantly influence the course of events.

This last one is possible thanks to the changes that the national goal trees of individual countries have undergone. Germany could become a monarchy, a democracy, or follow one of the militaristic fascist paths, Austria could pursue the path of liberation from its neighbor, Hungary could rebuild its former Austro-Hungarian power, and Belgium could resist the German invaders, if necessary establishing a government-in-exile in Africa.

The main pros of the game

  • Expanded Content: The DLC introduces a substantial amount of new content, including a larger national focus tree for Germany and additional trees for Austria, Hungary, Belgium, and the Congo. Many players appreciate the depth and variety this brings to gameplay.
  • New Features: The addition of special projects and a revamped nuclear bomb mechanic has been well-received. These features add layers of strategy and engagement to the gameplay, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Fun Gameplay: Many users report that playing as Germany is particularly enjoyable with the new focus tree, allowing for diverse strategies and paths, including historical and alternative outcomes.
  • Improved AI: Some players have noted improvements in AI behavior, which makes for a more challenging and engaging experience during gameplay.

The main cons of the game

  • High Price Point: Many reviews mention the DLC being overpriced for the amount of content offered, especially when compared to the quality and quantity of mods available for free.
  • Performance Issues: Players have reported significant lag and crashes, particularly in the late game, which detracts from the overall experience and is considered unacceptable for a premium DLC.
  • AI and Gameplay Logic Flaws: There are complaints about the AI's decision-making, particularly regarding Germany's performance in the game, which often leads to illogical outcomes that frustrate players.
  • Bugs and Historical Inaccuracies: Several users have pointed out various bugs and historical inaccuracies in the game, which undermine immersion and gameplay quality.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Balanced Focus Trees: Some players feel that the focus trees for minor nations like Hungary and Belgium are underwhelming or poorly designed, lacking meaningful content compared to Germany's tree.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Many reviews suggest that instead of introducing new DLC, the developers should focus on fixing existing bugs and enhancing core gameplay mechanics, particularly in multiplayer modes.
  • Engagement with Historical Context: Players expressed a desire for more historically accurate content and better integration of historical events into the gameplay, rather than relying on alternative history paths that may seem forced or poorly executed.
  • More Comprehensive Special Projects: Some players feel that the special projects feature could be expanded with more meaningful options and less RNG involved, making it more engaging and less tedious.

Summary

  • Overall, while the DLC has its fans and offers a wealth of new content, it also faces criticism for its pricing, performance issues, and certain design choices that do not meet the expectations of many players.
