Hearts of Iron IV: Prototype Vehicles Unit Pack is a DLC for the grand strategy game titled Hearts of Iron IV, originally released in 2016. Similar to the base version, the expansion was prepared by the team specialized in this genre, namely by the Paradox Development Studio.

New features in the expansion

As the title suggests, Hearts of Iron IV: Prototype Vehicles Unit Pack is a unit add-on for the game Hearts of Iron IV. It showcases vehicles and machines that, although they functioned in the minds of military engineers (and some even saw prototypes), for various reasons they never appeared on the battlefields of World War II. While the implementation of some concepts ran out of time for their designers, others were so fanciful that bringing them to life turned out to be essentially impossible. While creating them, the developers relied on archival sketches and plans, and prepared them in the form of 3D models.

List of new units

The described DLC introduces the following units:

  1. Grasshopper serving as a unique hybrid of a tank and a helicopter, capable of moving on tracks or hovering in the air;
  2. Skoda SK 13, a combat vehicle powered by coal;
  3. Praying Mantis - another combat vehicle, this time capable of peeking out from behind cover;
  4. Biemmi Naval amphibious tank;
  5. 2B1 "Oka" - a gigantic mortar equipped with a powerful cannon;
  6. Jasquet Articulated Tank, consisting of several interconnected segments;
  7. Modra Revolving Tank, equipped with a rotating hull of a rounded shape that allows it to deflect bullets;
  8. Giacomini Entrenchment - a unique combination of a tank and a bulldozer;
  9. So-To Anti-Tank, operating like a mobile armored gun transporter;
  10. Moto-Guzzi Semovente tank, equipped with two independent tracks and not afraid of sloping terrains;
  11. "Cobra" Light Cross Country Combat Vehicle with varied armament, in one version equipped with four large-caliber guns;
  12. M-V-Yoh, which is an American tank equipped with a small gun turret and also has spare tracks;
  13. Belyayev DB-LK - a "double airplane", with two cockpits and two positions for shooters;
  14. The Bachem Ba 349 Natter - a "disposable airplane", requiring the pilot to eject.

The main pros of the game

  • Visual Appeal: Some users appreciate the quality of the 3D models, noting that they add variety and fun to the game, especially for role-playing or customization purposes.
  • Bonus for Expansion Pass Owners: Several reviews mention that they received the pack as part of an expansion pass, which they view as a positive since they didn't pay extra for it.
  • Nostalgia and Interest: A few users find the concept of prototype vehicles interesting and enjoy having them as part of their collection, even if they don't significantly impact gameplay.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Gameplay Impact: The DLC is criticized for being purely cosmetic, with no new gameplay mechanics, special projects, or units added. Many users express disappointment that the models do not enhance or change the gameplay experience.
  • High Price for Limited Content: At a price point of $7, many users feel that the DLC is overpriced for what it offers—essentially just a pack of 3D models that they consider to be of little value.
  • Misleading Marketing: Users feel that the marketing and dev diaries suggested that the DLC would include more substantial content, such as new units or technologies, which led to feelings of being misled.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Integration with Existing Mechanics: Users expected the prototype vehicles to be integrated into the game's experimental facilities or special projects system, allowing for research and development of the vehicles, which did not happen.
  • Broader Accessibility: Many reviews mention that the models are locked to specific nations, limiting their use and reducing the overall value of the DLC.
  • Clearer Communication: Users suggest that the DLC description should clarify that it is purely cosmetic and not a content expansion, which could prevent future misunderstandings.

Summary

  • Overall, the DLC has been met with significant criticism for its lack of meaningful content and perceived value, leading many users to recommend against purchasing it.
