Heroes of Might and Magic IV: Winds of War Description
The immense popularity of the third installment of the Heroes of Might & Magic series has mostly been achieved due to its remarkable expansions (e.g. The Shadow of Death). It was certain, almost from the very beginning, that Heroes of Might & Magic IV would also receive various expansions. Six months after the release of HoMMIV: The Gathering Storm the second expansion – titled Winds of War, has been released.
Plot
The action of the expansion takes place in the kingdom of Channon, which lies on the northern continent of the land of Axeoth. It has become the target of a concentrated attack by five hostile armies, which crave the riches that lie in the kingdom’s capital city – Ryloss.
Mechanics
The expansion introduces 6 campaigns („To Rule the World”, „Barbarian Hordes”, „The Magnificent One”, „Enough is Enough”, „Death March” and „The Last Bastion”) which span over the area of 40 new maps, some of which have been created by the fans of the series. Each of the campaigns allows the players to lead one of the invading armies. The sixth campaign is unique, as all five leaders will be involved in a final battle on the same map, and the winner will claim dominion over the kingdom of Channon.
Heroes of Might & Magic IV: Winds of War brings a wide range of novelties to the production. They include, e.g. new locations (Goblin Armory, Ward of Sorcery, Gargantuan Dell, Dark Knight’s Sanctum, Siege Workshop and the Beast Pen), five new heroes, three new units (Catapult, Megadragon and Frenzied Gnasher), as well as several artefacts.
Technical aspects
The developers have also prepared a brand new soundtrack, which they have included in the expansion. Considering the creativity of the HoM&M IV fans, the map editor has also seen a few changes, and now allows the players to, e.g. create their own custom assests.
