Millennia is a 4X turn-based strategy and a competitor to the genre's greats, such as Sid Meier's Civilization. It was developed by C Prompt Games and published by Paradox Interactive.

Plot

Millennia has us leading a civilization over 10,000 years, from its beginnings to many possible futures. It's up to us how our people will cope with various problems affecting them, and whether or not they'll manage to come out on top.

Mechanics

Millennia makes use of the top-down perspective. The game is turn-based and is set over 10 eras, corresponding to 10,000 years of human history. We start off the game having only a handful of people, gathering basic resources and constructing simple buildings. Gradually we'll progress to creating more specialized goods, researching new technology, unlocking new buildings and upgrades. We'll also become stronger military-wise, learning how to smelt iron, creating advanced tools, weapons, and establishing guilds to unlock specialized produce, such as wine.

We can also choose in which direction our leader and our people will go - a nation of warriors, explorers, engineers or scientists. On the path of conquest, we'll wage many automated battles, the outcome of which depends on the units' strength. Our army is represented by pawns we can divide and set on the board as we see fit.

Regardless of the path we choose, we'll gradually acquire more territory we can specialize; iron-rich terrain can be dedicated to making weapons and tools, forest areas work great for paper production, while deposits of gold can be used to create coins or jewelry. We should also sell the surplus of produced goods, obtaining funds to keep developing our empire.

As the game progresses, so do we, entering new eras. Alongside actual, real-life ages, there are also alternate eras with their own laws, technology and units. Our actions can also plunge the world into a global crisis; cunning leaders can, however, take advantage of wars and plagues. The nation that manages to dominate other countries chooses the win condition. Though we can play through all the way to the final era, we can also achieve victory much earlier by making right decisions.

Game modes

Millennia supports singleplayer, as well as local and online multiplayer.

Technical aspects

Millennia features colorful, appealing visuals reminiscent of other games of the same genre. We'll spend most of our time watching the pretty map and interface.
