Hollow Home is an isometric RPG inspired by 2022's Russian invasion of Ukraine (especially the events that took place in Mariupol). It tells the story of people forced to adapt to their new, dangerous reality and the gradual destruction of their city. The game was developed by a Ukrainian team Twigames Inc.

It doesn't contain explicit violence, but its subject matter makes Hollow Home more appropriate to mature audiences.

Plot

The story begins on the eve of the invasion, its protagonist being the 14-year old Maksym. The game shows how his life looked like before the war, and how the subsequent days gradually strip him of his childhood innocence.

Mechanics

Hollow Home is a narrative-focused game revolving around the characters' personal stories and their city. We play as a teenager, so we won't take part in direct combat, but we can influence the story through extensive dialogue, shaping relationships and making choices. We have a limited number of actions every day, which makes every decision difficult, having major impact on the protagonist or his loved ones. There's simply no way to help everyone in need.

Maksym can learn new skills throughout the game - cooking, making tools or medicine, which he can use to help his neighbors. Acquired experience can be spent on developing his athleticism, thoughtfulness, sensitivity, alertness and other stats. Our chosen path opens up different problem-solving methods.

Hollow Home means to show the impact war has on people. The player will visit three districts, all of which change every day due to bombings, enemy soldiers and the civilians' actions.

Technical aspects

The game's refined artstyle, lack of combat and narrative nature give it lots of individuality. The mechanics may be reminiscent of the critically acclaimed Disco Elysium.
