An RPG created by two full-time janitors, inspired by the titles from the SNES era. In Kingdoms of the Dump, we can explore the titular realm. This is complemented by platforming sections and turn-based combat, which is further intensified by critical strikes implemented as QTEs.
In the history of the video game industry, there are numerous projects cretaed by individuals who, at first glance, don't seem to have much in common with it. One such project is Kingdoms of the Dump, an RPG that transports us back to the SNES console era. It is the result of a collaboration between two full-time janitors who develop video games "after hours," along with a host of other creators and artists. The release of this title was made possible partially thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
In Kingdoms of the Dump events are viewed from a bird's-eye perspective.
During the game we explore the titular Kingdoms of the Dump (5.5 in total), meet their inhabitants, complete quests for them, venture into dangerous and damp dungeons, and engage in battles with opponents. Interestingly, the game includes the ability to jump and platforming sections, which is not standard in productions of this type.
We recruit allies along the way, each with a unique set of abilities, strengths and weaknesses. The main character Dustin collects scrap, picks locks, and destroys metal enemies before combat, Ratavia can climb, and Walker uses firearms to stun opponents.
The fights are conducted in a turn-based mode. The key to success is the proper positioning of team members and making the right use of their unique skills, such as rust, climbing, or using a shotgun. The battles are diversified by critical attacks, which require us to press a button at the right moment. Besides regular enemies, we also face much more powerful bosses.
In Kingdoms of the Dump we play as Dustin Binsley, who is a Trash Knight. Wanting to save the Dump from total war, our character must traverse it far and wide, seeking allies and confronting toxic grimelins.
The graphics of Kingdoms of the Dump are done in pixel art technique.
