Legacy of Kain: Defiance is the fifth installment in the popular saga that began in 1996 on PlayStation. The game combines the elements from Blood Omen and Soul Reaver – two spin-off series in Legacy of Kain franchise. The story is designed in a way that accommodates both the veterans and the newcomers.

The two protagonists are Kain and Raziel, probably the most famous vampires in the history of digital entertainment. Both have their very own legendary swords and a dozen skills for defense and offense (sucking blood, spirit eating, telekinesis, taking over enemies’ bodies, etc.). Moreover, there is an option of combining all physical attack into deadly and effective combos, which gives us an advantage over the hordes of terrifying opponents. Another danger is posed by dangerous traps (such as pitfalls), although they can also be used to our advantage if we lure our enemies to their doom.

Legacy of Kain - The Best Video Game Series Ever is Unplayable Today

The Legacy of Kain series is one of the best tales in gaming history. It caused a revolution, shook up the industry at the time of the first PlayStation, and today it lies fallow, unfinished, forgotten. And barely playable. That's not how it should be.

The main cons of the game

  • Camera Issues: The most commonly cited con was the camera system, which many found to be poorly implemented. Users reported that the auto-camera often obstructed gameplay, particularly during platforming sections, making navigation frustrating.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Several reviews mentioned that the combat became monotonous due to the constant barrage of enemies and the repetitive nature of encounters. Users felt that the game lacked meaningful puzzles and exploration compared to its predecessors.
  • Control Problems: Many players experienced issues with control schemes, particularly with keyboard and mouse setups. The lack of proper controller support was also a significant frustration, with players having to remap controls extensively.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Depth in Puzzles: Users lamented the absence of the complex puzzles that characterized earlier titles in the series. Instead, they found the puzzles in Defiance to be simplistic and uninspired.
  • Exploration Elements: The game was criticized for a lack of exploration opportunities and a more linear design, which detracted from the sense of discovery found in previous games.
  • Improved Camera Control: Many reviews called for a remaster or remake that would address the camera issues, suggesting that a free camera or better control over the camera angles would significantly enhance the gameplay experience.

Summary

  • Overall, while Legacy of Kain: Defiance was appreciated for its story and combat improvements, it suffered from significant gameplay and control issues that left many players feeling frustrated.
