A unique take on the city builder genre. In Life Below instead of constructing cities we're building an underwater ecosystem. Our job is to restore the reef back to life with the help of various organisms. We must also protect the reef from outside threats.

Life Below is a game that gives us a unique perspective on the city builder genre. It does not allow us to build a city, but instead to create an underwater ecosystem from scratch. The game was developed by the independent Norwegian studio Megapop, which has titles such as Haxity and Trolls vs Vikings: Reborn in its portfolio, while its script is the work of Rhianna Pratchett. Moreover, wanting to ensure realism, the developers consulted with marine biologists.

Gameplay

In Life Below we play as an ocean guardian named Thalassa, whom Gaia has appointed to revive the coral reef and take care of it.

Underwater "city"

The underwater ecosystem resembles a city, the central point of which is the heart of the reef. It is based on various systems and governs by its own laws. Of course, it would be nothing without the creatures inhabiting it. If we want the piece of ocean floor given to us to pulse with life again, we need to create baits that attract various species of creatures, and then provide them with conditions that allow survival and development.

  • Performance Problems: Many reviews highlight significant performance issues, especially in the late game when the number of zones increases, leading to stuttering and lag.
  • Lack of Depth in Mechanics: Some players feel that while the game is visually appealing, it can become repetitive and lacks the strategic depth found in other city builders, with limited resources and upgrades.
  • Vague Tutorials and Guidance: Users have pointed out that the game could benefit from clearer tutorials and guidance on mechanics such as biodiversity, lures, and how to manage hazards effectively.

  • Enhanced Interaction with Ecosystem: Players have noted that the interaction between species and their environments could be more dynamic, suggesting that certain mechanics (like fish behavior) could be improved to reflect real ecological interactions better.

Summary

  • In summary, while *Life Below* has been praised for its charming visuals and unique concept, it faces criticism regarding balance, performance, and a lack of depth in gameplay mechanics. Players are hopeful for future updates that address these concerns and enhance the overall experience.
