Timberborn is a Polish economic strategy from the genre of city builders with survival elements, in which our goal is to create a thriving town inhabited by beavers. The game was developed by Mechanistry studio.
Timberborn is an indie game focusing on expanding the city, proper management of space and supplies, especially during natural disasters, and taking care of the needs and satisfaction of the inhabitants. The game was both developed and published by the Mechanistry studio.
Mankind is extinct and the beavers are now the only ones left in the world. Now they have the opportunity to see if they can do better than the human race and if the wooden metropolis they have created will stand the test of time.
Timberborn is a city builder with survival elements, in which the settlement created by us must be prepared for harsh weather conditions and various natural disasters, such as droughts, rainy seasons and floods. For this purpose, apart from creating numerous wooden buildings for living and diversifying the life of the town's inhabitants, we have to take care of food supplies, but also a well-functioning water irrigation system. This means that we need to not only interfere with river beds, create dams, but also dig canals with the use of explosives. However, the space on which we can expand is limited, so apart from the possibility of constructing multi-storey buildings, we need to plan well how we want to expand our settlement in order to create efficient production chains.
And as we manage the beaver colony, the main component of our buildings is wood. Thanks to it we'll build houses, water mills, workshops, monuments, temples and carousels. However, metal will also be necessary in more complex constructions. Alongside this, we have the ability to create fields of crops for the beavers to harvest and turn into the food they need to survive and create reserves of it for a rainy day, as well as taking care of the lighting and even powering these more complex structures.
All this is thanks to the hard work of the beavers, who are eager to get to work if the conditions are right. But they also need to rest from time to time, which is why we need to be mindful of their wellbeing, because a well-rested and happy worker is a good worker. Building appropriate structures, such as carousels and numerous decorations, and providing them with a balanced diet will help with this.
Apart from a few ready-made maps created by the developers, which differ in the layout of the terrain, and thus in the difficulty of colonising it, Timberborn also has an editor, thanks to which we can create such a map and share it with the game community, or take up the challenge on a map created by another player.
Timberborn is a 3D game with clear graphics and rustic style, in which we have the opportunity to freely operate the camera.

Timberborn is a good, almost natural, marriage of two genres that couldn’t quite surpass its own issues to become something greater than the sum of its parts. Late mechanics implementation, lower replayability than expected for a 1.0, and unhelpful tutorials all drag down an otherwise amazing game. There’s much holding it back and much holding it up, amounting to a great, but imperfect title overall.

Timberborn is a colony simulator with a fantastic core identity and some genuinely unique systems driving it, particularly when it comes to water management. While I personally found that the challenge, urgency, and sense of direction began to fade as I became more familiar with the mechanics, there is still a lot here to enjoy for players who like slower-paced, methodical colony builders, or those who really want to build a series of intricately designed beaver dams.

Timberborn felt slow to start with however once you have grasped the fundamentals there is a lot to be focussing on. From gathering resources, and unlocking items through science, to building and looking after your furry minions, can you maintain your colony? For a game that has been developed by only a handful of people working from their homes, it is impressive to see such a well-refined game. The devs have been listening to the players and each update brings new concepts that have been based on feedback received. It is fantastic to see a company want to work with their audience and among other things, this has helped Timberborn be so successful. Timberborn receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award!
