Lords of the Fallen Review - Troublesome Reboot, Step in the Right Direction
The new Lords of the Fallen is definitely a better game than the almost decade-old original. More demanding and diverse, it offers a more interesting world. Still, it comes with a few problems.

Destructoid: 6 / 10 by Steven Mills
When the FPS isn’t dipping, and bosses aren’t cheesing you every step of the way, LotF feels good. But with myriad performance issues, broken multiplayer, and boss fights that increase difficulty through unfair mechanics as opposed to well-developed ones, it really weighs down on the experience.
VG247: 3 / 5 by Sherif Saed
Lords of the Fallen is a game of uneven quality. At its best, it offers level design, bosses, and combat that’s generally up there among the best Souls-likes. At its – more often – worst, it leans hard on quantity over quality, and a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes those games challenging. My issues with its balance and difficulty can improve with patches, and my misgivings about its design pitfalls are the sort of thing that sequels improve on all the time. It’s left me wanting to play Lords of the Fallen 2.
TheSixthAxis: 4 / 10 by Jason Coles
I desperately want to like Lords of the Fallen, but it's the first game all year that's actively annoyed me. I love the Soulslike genre more than any other, but this game took all of the lessons it could have learned since the original Lords of the Fallen and either forgot them entirely, or just misunderstood them so greviously that you'd assume it skipped a class.
The main pros of the game
- Visuals and Presentation: The graphics are widely praised, with many users noting the game's stunning art direction and atmospheric environments. The dual-world mechanic (Axiom and Umbral) adds a unique exploration aspect.
- Soundtrack: The music is highlighted as a strong point, with many tracks being memorable and enhancing the overall experience.
- Gameplay Mechanics: The game introduces interesting mechanics such as the Umbral Lamp for exploration and combat, with some players enjoying the variety of builds and playstyles available.
- Level Design: Some users appreciate the interconnected world and level structure, reminiscent of older Souls games, where traversal is as important as boss fights.
- Multiplayer Features: The co-op system is noted as being one of the best in the genre, allowing seamless play with friends.
- Continuous Improvements: Many players acknowledge the developers' commitment to fixing bugs and improving performance since launch, with significant updates making the game more enjoyable.
The main cons of the game
- Technical Issues: Users report various bugs, crashes, and performance problems, including frame drops and audio issues, which have persisted even after patches.
- Enemy and Boss Design: There are complaints about a lack of enemy variety, with many encounters feeling repetitive. Boss fights are often described as underwhelming or lacking challenge.
- Combat Mechanics: Some players find the combat to be clunky, with issues related to hit detection, camera control, and the lack of unique movesets for different weapon types.
- Quest Design: Several users express frustration with NPC questlines that can be easily failed due to unclear triggers, leading to lost opportunities for rewards.
- Difficulty Balance: While some players enjoy the challenge, others find the game overly punishing, especially in terms of enemy density and boss difficulty scaling in New Game Plus modes.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- More Enemy Variety: Players desire a greater diversity of enemies and boss mechanics to keep encounters fresh and engaging.
- Improved Combat Fluidity: Suggestions include better responsiveness in combat, unique movesets for different weapons, and a dedicated jump button.
- Clearer Quest Design: Users want clearer indicators for quest progression and less punishing fail conditions for NPC quests.
- Better Multiplayer Rewards: Concerns are raised about the disparity in rewards for non-host players in co-op mode, leading to feelings of frustration and imbalance.
- Quality of Life Improvements: Players suggest features like item tracking for completionists, more intuitive controls, and better optimization for performance.
Summary
- Overall, while Lords of the Fallen has many appealing aspects, including its visuals and unique mechanics, it also suffers from significant issues that impact gameplay enjoyment, particularly regarding technical performance and enemy design.

Lords of the Fallen Description
The Lords of the Fallen is a reboot of the soulslike action RPG series launched in 2014. It was developed by Hexworks studio, part of the Polish company CI Games.
Plot
The action of The Lords of the Fallen is set a thousand years after the events presented in the original. Centuries have passed since the defeat of the demonic god Adyr, and the sinister deity is about to be reborn. The last hope for the world lies with the dark crusader, who must embark on a journey through the lands of the living and the dead to overthrow Adyr.
Compared to the first Lords of the Fallen, the game stands out due to a much richer storyline. At the same time, the game world and the story set in it have become much darker.
Game mechanics
The gameplay in The Lords of the Fallen begins with the creation of a character. The production allows us to decide on her appearance, as well as choose one of nine professions. The choice we make at the outset only determines the initial path we will follow; in the later phase of the adventure, nothing will prevent us from developing the hero or heroine regardless of the class chosen earlier.
Further on, there is nothing left for us to do but throw ourselves into adventures. There are two huge lands waiting to be traversed here - the world of the living, known as Axiom, and the land of the dead, called Umbral. Although numerous dangers lurk in both, the greatest horrors will be found in the latter. We cross the border between the worlds with the help of a special lantern, which allows us to reach places that the living never even dreamed of, and discover their secrets, as well as manipulate the souls of enemies. We also go to the world of the dead when we suffer death on the battlefield in the land of the living. We are then given one chance to return to our body, but the road to it involves facing various infernal monsters.
Speaking of fighting - we fight dynamic skirmishes with opponents, and it's up to us whether we decide to eliminate enemies with white weapons or decide to fight them with magic. On our way we are confronted with diverse (though most often - equally terrifying) opponents, and in addition to serial opponents, we often have to face much more powerful than them bosses. Although the combat here is faster than in the original, during clashes success is ensured not only by dexterity and reflexes, but also by patience; for it is often worthwhile to carefully examine the opponent, try to discover his weak points and gaps in defense and wait for a convenient moment to launch an attack.
As you progress, you develop your hero or heroine, upgrading attributes and spells, as well as acquiring increasingly better equipment (weapons and armor).
Game modes
The Lords of the Fallen can be played in single or multiplayer mode. In addition to co-op, the title allows us to invade other players and make their lives miserable.
Technical aspects
The Lords of the Fallen runs on Unreal Engine 5 technology.
Additional info
The game was first announced as a sequel to Lords of the Fallen. Although it was initially overseen by the same team that developed the original, in subsequent years it began to change hands. In July 2015, Tomasz Gop, the lead designer of the first part of the series, was ousted from the project, and although he still returned to CI Games in March 2016, he left the studio's ranks again after just over a year. Subsequently, the native company began a search for a team willing to help with the described title, which ended with the establishment of cooperation with the American Defiant Studios. The project, the creation of which the new developers started from scratch, was to work on the basis of Unreal Engine 4 technology. However, CI Games was not satisfied with this cooperation, due to which, in May 2019, the company decided to terminate it and at the same time announced that it would take on the completion of this work on its own. To this end, it opened a new studio - Hexworks - in September 2020. Finally, The Lords of the Fallen lived to see an official announcement at gamescom 2022.
