Magic: The Gathering - Battlemage is a hybrid of turn-based strategy game and RTS, based on the license of the famous card game Magic: The Gathering. The game was developed by Realtime Associates and published by Acclaim Entertainment.

Story

Magic: The Gathering - Battlemage takes us to the fantasy land of Corondor. Black clouds hung over the continent when planeswalker Ravidel decided to eliminate the remaining mages and take control of the whole territory. To this end, he lures to Corondor the most powerful wizards, whom he imprisons and forces into fratricidal battle; these unfortunate mages are the Conquerors who, like Ravidel, would like to take over the land and the Defenders who would like to defend it at all costs against the plots of their adversaries.

Mechanics

In the course of the game in The Gathering - Battlemage we play the role of one of the mages and take part in real-time battles, during which we observe the situation on one of the thirty battlefields from a top-down perspective. During the game, we summon monsters to the arena and cast spells that have been assigned to the cards we hold; their collection increases as we progress - after each victory we get the opponent's cards, which gradually increases our combat potential and enables us to face increasingly dangerous challenges.

Game modes

The basic variant of Magic: The Gathering - Battlemage is the story campaign in which we conquer new territories. Due to the fact that the game takes place in turn-based mode, the key to success is above all careful observation of the actions of the opponents and proper reaction to their moves.

In addition, a Duel multiplayer module has been implemented in the game - on PlayStation 1 we can fight a duel with another player on split-screen, and in the PC version up to four people can interact with each other via a LAN or the Internet.

Technical aspects

Magic: The Gathering - Battlemage features two-dimensional visuals. Noteworthy is the fact that all cards known from the physical version of Magic: The Gathering appear in the game.
