Release Date: cancelled
The never-released third installment in Pandemic Studios' open-world TPP action game series. The project never progressed beyond the concept phase. It was originally titled Mercenaries 3: No Limits and was canceled when the studio closed in late 2009.
Mercenaries is a series of third-person open world action games, often labeled as "GTA at war." The series began in 2005 with the game Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, which received a sequel in 2008 titled Mercenaries 2: World in Flames.
The team behind it, Pandemic Studios, known for games like Full Spectrum Warrior, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, Destroy All Humans!, Star Wars: Battlefront, and The Saboteur, was planning to develop a third installment. However, the project never progressed beyond the conceptual phase. It was ultimately canceled at the end of 2009, and the decision was made to close the studio responsible for it.
A video showcasing a so-called vertical slice of the project indicated that Mercenaries 3: No Limits (a working title; the code name was Project Y) would take us to Cuba in 2017, with the main antagonists being members of a faction called Blackfire. Although it's unclear exactly what the gameplay would have been like, it can be expected that the developers would have used the formula established in previous entries of the series, offering an open world, an extensive arsenal, and a wide range of vehicles and machines.
It is also unknown what technology was supposed to be used to develop the third game. Nevertheless, before its cancellation, Pandemic Studios created a proprietary engine called Odin, which was made with open-world productions in mind. Ultimately, the only title that utilized it was the already mentioned The Saboteur.
