An arcade adventure TPP game set in the 1990s. In Mixtape we follow a group of high school friends from California. On their way to the farewell party they share their memories, taking part in a unique journey accompanied by the music of that time period.
Mixtape is an adventure arcade game created by the Beethoven and Dinosaur studio, known for the well-received The Artful Escape. It was published by Annapurna Interactive, which has many unique productions in its portfolio, such as Journey, Stray and 12 Minutes.
The action of Mixtape takes place in the 1990s in Northern California (USA). The main characters of the story are three high school students. On the last night before graduating from high school they decide to go to a farewell party. On the way, a playlist of favorite songs draws the characters into dreamy reconstructions of their most important memories, such as their first teenage kiss, skateboarding trips, or troubles with the police.
The proper part of the gameplay in Mixtape - the "awake" part - takes the form of typical adventure sequences in third-person perspective (TPP), with exploration and dialogues. The other part is experiencing the characters' memories. It's done in various conventions, often in arcade form. We can be watching the action both from behind the characters' backs and in a form reminiscent of a 2.5D platformer.
The journey of our characters is accompanied by iconic music from the 1990s, with performers such as The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop or Joy Division. Mixtape is also distinguished by its graphics - all the animations are rendered at a reduced frame rate.

Mixtape is like an interactive coming-of-age movie. After spending half an hour with it at Summer Game Fest, it's one of my most anticipated games of the year.

WellPlayed: 10 / 10 by Christie McQualter
Mixtape's style, soundtrack and unique storytelling flair all combine to elicit feelings both new and long forgotten. Simple moments make you appreciate life for what it is: a continuous evolution rather than a static state of being. Our adolescent selves relished in that freedom, and Mixtape seeks to recapture the magic.
Checkpoint Gaming: 8.5 / 10 by Omi Koulas
Mixtape is an adventure specifically for those of us who grew up in the angsty 90s. For those players, the top-tier soundtrack selection and unpacking themes you may have been avoiding for a few decades is going to hit very hard. For others, the rose-tinted glasses and hammy dialogue may feel distant or indulgent. Just like an actual mixtape someone makes for you, not every track lands. But it’s so clearly made with love, and the tracks that do will stay with you long after it’s over.
GameSpew: 8 / 10 by Kim Snaith
Stunning art direction and a stellar soundtrack are what makes Mixtape so wonderful. Its narrative isn't the most meaningful, but when everything else is so good, it hardly matters. This is a game that exists to be a short, enjoyable experience: its characters and story might not leave a lasting impression on you, but its music and visuals certainly will.
