A Polish tactical game with roguelike and extraction game elements, made by the developers of Hard West 2 and Rogue Waters. In Nightmare Frontier we end up in the Wild West overrun by nightmarish creatures. We lead a group of people trying to regain control over their city.
Nightmare Frontier is a tactical game enriched with elements borrowed from roguelike and extraction shooter genres. The game was developed by Ice Code Games - a Polish development studio, which has Re-Legion, Hard West 2, and Rogue Waters in its portfolio.
In Nightmare Frontier the action is viewed in an isometric perspective.
The pillar of the game are expeditions into the depths of a city overrun by the titular nightmares. Venturing further and further, we have to face increasingly greater challenges, exposing ourselves to potential death, and consequently - the loss of everything we have managed to accumulate.
On the other hand, risks can pay off, because the more formidable opponents we face, the more valuable rewards we receive for defeating them. This means that during the game we regularly have to make decisions whether we want to continue the journey or retreat to a previously chosen position.
We lead a band of survivors in the game and fighting enemies is the main point of the program. The clashes take place in a turn-based mode, and during them we must skillfully juggle ranged attacks (using firearms) and close combat, rely elements of the environment and try to merge all of this into successful combinations.
We must remember that each character struggles with their own inner demons. The weaknesses of our subordinates affect what they have to deal with, as well as determine their combat potential and ability to carry out orders. Their overall condition also remains important. For this reason, it is worth letting individual band members rest from time to time, replacing them with others.
As we progress, we accumulate more powerful equipment, as well as acquire resources and upgrades that allow us to develop the items we own. Given that technology from the 20th century coexists here with alchemy, we can create various, ingenious hybrids. Over time we also develop skills of our characters.
Nightmare Frontier transports us to an alternative version of 19th-century America. On the West Coast of this continent, a dark force known as the Nightmare appeared, due to which its lands were taken over by beasts called Dreadweavers, embodying human fears. During the game, we take on the role of the leader of a band of survivors, who tries to face the threat and reclaim their city district by district.
