Browsing through long-forgotten Internet forums and discovering games that haven't been launched in years can be the foundation of a thrilling story. An independent studio Beeswax Games started with this premise, creating No Players Online. It is a production that defies strict genre classification, combining elements of adventure, action, and horror games.

Gameplay

In No Players Online the gameplay takes place entirely on a virtual computer screen reminiscent of the 1990s.

Abandoned online shooter

The game allows us to check the files located on the machine's hard drive, among which the mysterious capture_the_flag_prototype.exe takes the lead. Upon launching it, we are presented with an abandoned online shooter, based on the titular mode. It quickly becomes apparent that this is just the prelude to a larger mystery involving its developer and the surrounding conspiracy. The attempt to solve it is the driving force of the gameplay.

Other games and combining them

By checking individual files and reading a little-known Internet forum while getting to know its community, we come across more games that we can run on our virtual computer (including a version of the iconic Minesweeper). Additionally, the game offer the "soul transfer" mechanic, which involves combining individual titles. The results of such experiments can be unique, but they may also lead to the emergence of various errors.
