Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I released for the PC, is the first major expansion to the cRPG titled Pillars of Eternity from the Obsidian Entertainment studio; the DLC requires the vanilla version of the production.

The action of the expansion takes place after the events of the campaign. The triumph of the player-controlled heroes has had major influence on the land and tales of their success have reached the remote region of White March, situated at the base of a grim mountain fortress named Durgan. The stronghold has been abandoned by its dwarven builders a long time ago and is now inhabited by monsters; the presence of the new tenants, combined with numerous traps, makes the castle a death trap and most who enter are never seen again. There is still no lack of daredevils, who are ready to risk their lives, since it is rumored that inside, Durgan holds great wealth and powerful artifacts; the player’s group also takes up the challenge and barges into the fortress in search of the legendary secret of the durganian steel.

Pillars of Eternity Game Series

Pillars of Eternity is a series of isometric projection RPGs with strong references to such classics of the genre as Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. The player travels through the author's fantasy world, commanding a team of colorful characters. At the head of the company is the protagonist, whose characteristics can be freely adjusted at the beginning of the game. Rich in descriptions and stories, the carefully created world offers a whole range of dialogue options and opportunities to interact with NPCs. Of course, there are also battles, which are fought in real time (with the option of active pause). As we perform successive tasks, our team grows in strength, learning new skills and acquiring better equipment.

More of the same, but with an increased focus on combat and dungeons. If that appeals, The White March may be worth a visit.

Game Debate: 8.5 / 10 by Stuart Thomas

Getting back into the world of Pillars of Eternity was soothing, like a comfortable pair of slippers that you'd almost forgotten about. Sure, it didn't give me the same unexpected euphoria that the core game slapped me with but as a few evening's entertainment, it was a very welcome addition to the lore and gave me a chance to lark around in a world which, despite its reliance on walls of text and creepy obsession with souls, I'd fallen in love with.

IGN: 6.8 / 10 by Leif Johnson

The White March Part I provides some incentive to return to the Dyrwood in the form of a higher level cap, and the delightfully brutal combat, but few of the other new features leave a lasting impression. Despite an avalanche of possibilities provided by the wintry setting and the two ostensibly unique companions, the first half of The White March never feels like more than a side quest that was never implemented. There's still plenty on offer here for players who enjoy Pillars' combat above all else, but it's an expansion best suited to new players rather than veterans.

The main pros of the game

  • High-Quality Writing and Voice Acting: The expansion maintains the strong narrative style of the base game, with well-written dialogue and engaging character interactions.
  • New Areas and Exploration: Introduces new zones, including the snowy landscapes of the White March and the dwarven stronghold, Durgan's Battery, which are visually appealing and rich in lore.
  • Challenging Combat: Offers a variety of new enemies and bosses, requiring players to adapt their strategies.
  • Soulbound Weapons: Introduces unique weapons that grow in power as players complete challenges, adding a new layer of character progression.
  • Increased Level Cap: Raises the level cap, allowing for new abilities and skills, enhancing character customization.
  • New Companions: Adds interesting new characters that contribute to the story and gameplay dynamics.

The main cons of the game

  • Difficulty Spikes: Many players found the combat encounters overwhelming, with some fights feeling unfair, especially against new enemy types with crowd control abilities.
  • Integration Issues: The expansion's placement within the main story can feel awkward, as it interrupts the flow of the main campaign and requires players to backtrack.
  • Limited Character Development for New Companions: The new companions, while interesting, have less depth compared to those from the base game, with fewer personal quests.
  • Technical Issues: Players reported bugs and performance problems, particularly in new areas, affecting the overall experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Engaging Story Content: Some players felt that the narrative was less compelling than in the base game and lacked the depth expected from an expansion.
  • Greater Variety in Loot: Users expressed a desire for more unique and interesting loot options, especially in terms of soulbound weapons.
  • Better Difficulty Balancing: Many players wished for improved balance in enemy encounters, particularly concerning crowd control mechanics and scaling difficulty options.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Pillars of Eternity: The White March Part I" offers substantial content and retains the quality of the original game, it is marred by difficulty spikes, technical issues, and integration challenges within the main story. Players interested in the expansion should be aware of these factors but may still find value in the new content and gameplay mechanics.
