Gert Lush Gaming: 7.4 / 10 by Jim Smale

Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition is a vibrant and lovingly assembled celebration of a platforming classic. The amount of content, the quality of the enhancements, and the excellent history section make it easy to appreciate how much work went into this collection. Despite a few frustrations and missing features, it is a great way to rediscover Rayman or experience it for the first time. It is nostalgic, colourful, and still a lot of fun to play.

Our hero Rayman sure looks as spiffy today as he did in 1995, eh?

The main pros of the game

  • Nostalgia and Classic Gameplay: Many players appreciate the return of Rayman, celebrating its legacy as a classic 2D platformer that holds up well over time.
  • Multiple Versions Included: The game features five different versions of Rayman 1, including the Jaguar and GBC versions, as well as additional levels from expansions, providing a comprehensive package for fans.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: The inclusion of features like save states, rewind functionality, and customizable difficulty options makes the game more accessible, especially for new players.
  • Bonus Content: The collection includes a documentary, concept art, interviews, and a design bible, adding depth and historical context to the game.
  • Affordable Price: At around €20, many users find the price reasonable given the amount of content included.

The main cons of the game

  • Replacement of Original Soundtrack: The most significant complaint is the complete replacement of the original soundtrack with new compositions that many users feel do not capture the essence of the original game. This has led to a loss of nostalgia for long-time fans.
  • Mandatory Ubisoft Connect: Players are frustrated by the requirement to install and log into Ubisoft Connect to play the game, which adds unnecessary complexity and potential performance issues.
  • Technical Issues: Some users report bugs, such as save files disappearing, audio desynchronization, and frame rate drops, particularly in the DOS version.
  • Lack of Language Options: The absence of the original French language option is noted as a disappointment, especially considering the game's French origins.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Original Soundtrack Option: Many players express a desire for a toggle to switch between the new and original soundtracks, as the original music is seen as integral to the game's identity.
  • Cloud Save Support: The absence of Steam Cloud support is mentioned, with players preferring to use Steam's saving system rather than Ubisoft's.
  • Additional Versions: Some users wish for the inclusion of the Sega Saturn version, which had unique features and differences from other ports.
  • Level Editor: The lack of a level editor or community sharing features, like those in "Rayman Designer," is seen as a missed opportunity to engage the fan community further.

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, while the "Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition" has many strengths, particularly in terms of nostalgia and content variety, its execution has left many fans disappointed, particularly due to the soundtrack changes and technical issues.
