Release Date: February 10, 2025
An action RPG with additional roguelike mechanics. Reality Break allows us to control a space ship and rewrite the entire reality. We are allowed to "assign" parameters to objects and skills, as well as to reset the entire timeline. A so-called butterfly effect is linked to our choices and they can have unexpected consequences.
Reality Break is an action RPG, enriched with mechanics borrowed from the roguelike genre. The game was developed by the independent American studio Element Games, which has in its portfolio slightly smaller scale projects, such as Evil Robot Traffic Jam or Sky Cannoneer.
Reality Break takes us to a science fiction universe. We embody a cosmic mercenary who, although he never asked for it, gained the ability to change the reality around him and shape it according to his own whims. In this way, the protagonist becomes the target of malevolent forces, which forces him to start fighting for survival. During this journey, the hero will discover the nature of his power, as well as understand the reasons why he was endowed with it.
In Reality Break, the action is viewed from a top-down perspective. Even though during the game we sit at the helm of a spaceship, and the adventure mainly leads us through areas located in interstellar space, the core of the gameplay does not deviate from what other productions of this type have accustomed us to. While exploring locations, we engage in dynamic battles with opponents, among which powerful bosses lead the way. As we progress, we upgrade our fighter, which allows us to face increasingly greater challenges.
Compared to other action RPGs with elements of the roguelike genre, the described game is primarily distinguished by the possibility of rewriting reality. The hero's powers allow him to modify the attributes of his ship's equipment, unlock new skills, and also influence the game world and the course of events.
Thanks to them, the protagonist can upgrade items and adjust them to current preferences (changing their sizes or rarity levels), increase the available time in time-limited missions or even raise the level of difficulty.
It is worth being vigilant and using these powers with discretion. Even though rewriting reality can provide us with various benefits, every change we make causes the so-called butterfly effect, which can bring unexpected results.
The consequences of our actions become most visible after resetting the timeline. It forces us to start the crossing anew, keeping in mind that the next one may turn out to be more difficult than the previous ones. In return, however, we receive reality points, which we can allocate to the talents we choose. These significantly affect the gameplay, for example by the possibility of keeping a selected item after a reset or improving the quality of found loot.
And speaking of loot - we can analyze the acquired items, unlocking various upgrades for them. This process takes place in real time and can take up entire days or even weeks. On the other hand, this procedure can also be rewritten, significantly shortening it. The icing on the cake are the upgrades we acquire for the ship (which allow us, for example, to use drones on the battlefield), as well as the accumulated bonuses associated with item sets.
