The fifth part of a series of unusual strategies in which we make decisions by moving left or right of the cards displayed on the screen. In Reigns: Beyond we become the leader of an indie rock band, which we manage during intergalactic journeys.
Reigns: Beyond is the fifth part of a series of unusual strategies enriched with elements of puzzle games, adventure games and roguelikes, launched in 2016. Like earlier productions under this brand, this game was developed by an independent studio, Nerial.
Unlike its predecessors, Reigns: Beyond takes us on a journey into the science fiction universe. Moreover, this time we are not sitting on the royal throne, but playing the leaders of an indie rock band, dreaming of an intergalactic career. For this purpose the band travels from planet to planet, playing concert after concert and recruiting new members. We, on the other hand, must make decisions which, above all, will keep both us and our colleagues alive, and only then will they provide us with wealth and fame.
The gameplay in Reigns: Beyond is similar to what we were familiar with earlier games under this sign. During the game, we manage the resources of our spaceship and its crew, take part in interstellar battles, unlock Galactic guitars to make our band more attractive, and talk to more than 60 characters, including potential new members of our team as well as other personnel, headed by our manager - Lord Shark - or tax collectors. All this is presented in the form of more than a 1,400 cards, which we move left or right, making negative or positive choices in individual cases. We must be careful here, because it is impossible to predict the consequences of all our decisions, which are often tragic.
The graphic design of Reigns: Beyond remains the same as in previous editions of the series, once again kept in a characteristic, quite minimalist style. The game is accompanied by a soundtrack by Sam Webster.

Although the novelty of swiping wears off pretty quickly, Reigns: Beyond is an impressive game for its price point. For less than L5, it’s not a risky investment - and it's probably worth the entry fee just to experience the unique gameplay and hilarious script. It’s definitely more suited for short bursts on mobile, but if the Apple Arcade isn’t an option for you, then the Switch version is a nice alternative.

Reigns: Beyond is an impressive achievement and I don’t really want to think how long it would take a player to see all the more than 1,400 featured cards. The structure makes it easy to get a full-blown weird adventure in under 10 minutes. Stop after death, consider your choices, do something else, and return for another dose after a few hours.
