Renaissance Kingdom Wars is a game that combines elements of classic RTS titles and the grand strategy genre. It belongs to a series started in 2011 by the game Dawn of Fantasy (later renamed Kingdom Wars), and was developed by an independent team called Reverie World Studios.

Unlike the two earlier installments of the series, Medieval Kingdom Wars and Kingdom Wars: The Plague (aka Kingdom Wars 4), which were set in the Middle Ages, this new title takes us back in time to the Renaissance era (the game begins in 1510).

Mechanics

By default, we start the game in Renaissance Kingdom Wars as a simple mercenary captain who strives to create an empire. This means that the level of complexity of the game and the scale of the actions taken increase over time, and additional mechanics are made available to us.

Fulfilling contracts for the powerful, we must gather a sufficiently large force to conquer the first city, then develop it and challenge the monarch in order to gain a chance to take leadership over our own state. With the crown on our head, we strive to subjugate other countries and transform the owned lands into a power that shakes the entire known world. Optionally, we can skip the initial phases of the game and start playing immediately as a minor noble or even a king.

The game world is vast - it covers Europe (Western, Central and Eastern), the Russian states and the Golden Horde, as well as the Middle East (Byzantium) and North Africa. There are several dozen kingdoms, consisting of over 500 cities and settlements, which can be our potential starting points or targets waiting for conquest.

Mechanics is based on two pillars, so to speak. The first is the strategic layer, within which we view the entire world and make decisions of global importance. The second is the tactical layer, allowing us to focus on a single city or settlement, constructing subsequent buildings and marking out roads, as well as building fortifications and deploying our troops.

Trade, economic development and diplomacy play an important role here. The game allows us to form alliances and maintain friendly relations with neighbors. Sooner or later, wars begin, so it's worth preparing for them in advance.

Battles take place in real time and thousands of units take part in them. At the beginning we lead an army rooted in the Middle Ages, for which the pinnacle of technology is a wooden trebuchet. Over time we develop it, using troops equipped with gunpowder weapons or powerful cannons. We take part in skirmishes not only on land, but also at sea, commanding a fleet of increasingly advanced combat ships.
