An RPG game, exploring the topic of mental health. In Rue Valley, we take on the role of a protagonist struck by a temporal anomaly. The main character explores the nature of this anomaly and meets the inhabitants of the titular town, trying to improve his mental state.
Mental health is a topic relatively rarely addressed by video game developers. Among the projects that tackle it is the RPG titled Rue Valley described here. This production is developed by the independent Serbian team Emotion Spark Studio, and it was created in collaboration with mental health experts and the Movember organization.
In Rue Valley events are viewed from an isometric perspective. As we explore the titular town forgotten by God, we get to know its residents, who are diverse in terms of personality, history, and the problems they face, while also learning more about the character we control.
We can create the main character according to our own preferences. By collecting memories, we unlock intentions and worldviews. Additionally, we can experiment with the effects of different states during the game. All of this influences the available dialogue options and determines the ways we can handle the challenges that come our way.
For example, the game allows us to embody a loner who overanalyzes everything they encounter, or a daredevil who follows only their intuition. Our character's confidence can be increased with the help of alcohol, while sensitivity can be heightened by putting them in a state of anxiety.
Due to the fact that our character is stuck in a time loop, the game encourages experimenting with conducting conversations in various ways, as well as with alternative solutions to encountered problems.
Rue Valley takes us to the titular backwater town. We arrive there in the shoes of a protagonist who not only struggles with psychological issues but is also trapped in a time loop. Wanting to rise from his knees, the protagonist must delve into the nature of the anomaly and discover its origin.
The graphic design of Rue Valley is maintained in a comic book style.

Game Ratings for Rue Valley Video Game.
Game8: 84 / 100 by Charlene Sarmiento
Rue Valley is an isometric narrative RPG gem that blends a captivating, emotionally-charged story with memorable characters all in one package. Although it has a few technical weaknesses, it doesn't heavily retract from the overall experience. Eugene Harrow's strange journey into the unknown of his own psyche and other people is an intriguing, even relatable, experience.
Screen Hype: 8.5 / 10 by Lyssa Greywood
Rue Valley plays out like a mix of detective work and emotional archaeology. You explore, experiment, and test how small changes can ripple through each loop. You can’t wander too far from the motel — 47 minutes isn’t long — but you can visit the bar to the north, Max’s gas station to the south, and the roadblock. Each place hides clues or moments that shift how events play out next time. ...Every so often, the tension melts into quiet, human moments. Playing the piano in the bar for Anitta is a favourite of mine — a rare breather from the chaos. Talking to Robin at the reception often triggered “aha!” moments about what was really going on. It’s a game that mixes madness and calm, and somehow makes both feel equally satisfying.
PlayStation Universe: 7 / 10 by John-Paul Jones
Much like its primary protagonist then, Rue Valley certainly has no shortage of faults or shortcomings and it's also practically impossible for Rue Valley to escape the vast, looming shadow of ZA/UM's epic adventure, Disco Elysium. Taking all of that into account however, Rue Valley's Disco Elysium meets Groundhog Day concept is a compelling one that finds itself ably anchored by a great art style, good writing and interesting characters and it's one that will surely tide over Disco Elysium fans looking for their next existential adventure fix.
