Saints Row: Gat out of Hell is a standalone expansion for the action adventure game, Saints Row IV, that was originally released in the mid 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PCs, and then re-issued for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as Re-Elected edition. It was developed by Volition, a studio known for the Saints Row series and such titles as Red Faction and Freespace. A team at High Voltage Software was also involved in the production process. In Gat out of Hell, we assume the role of Johnny Gat, who goes to hell along with Kinzie. Our task is to help the two to rescue the kidnapped president whom Satan intends to marry to his daughter.

The gameplay mechanics rely on the same solutions as the original game. We still deal with a humorous and absurd sandbox, in which we preform increasingly bizarre missions for the opposers of Satan, who want to turn the current hierarchy of importance upside down. The developers did introduce a few novelties, though. Johnny received new powers and even angelic wings. There are also new weapon models to choose from, such as an armchair equipped with miniguns. Satan also got new lesser and bigger (even huge) minions.

The main cons of the game

  • Short Playtime: The main story can be completed in a mere 4-6 hours, with many players feeling the game is too short for a standalone title.
  • Lack of Depth: The game primarily consists of side activities and diversions rather than substantial missions, leading to a sense of repetitiveness.
  • No Character Customization: Players cannot customize their character, which is a significant departure from previous titles in the series.
  • Bland Environments: Some players found the hellish landscape to be visually uninteresting and repetitive compared to the vibrant settings of previous games.
  • Absence of Music: The lack of a radio or licensed soundtrack detracts from the immersive experience that was a highlight in earlier titles.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Character Customization: Many players missed the ability to customize their character’s appearance and outfits, which was a staple of earlier games.
  • Vehicle Customization and Storage: The inability to customize or store vehicles was noted as a downside, especially since driving is less relevant due to the flying mechanic.
  • More Engaging Story Missions: Players expressed a desire for more traditional story missions with character interactions and development, rather than relying heavily on repetitive side activities.
  • Expanded Use of Familiar Characters: While there are appearances from familiar characters, players wanted more interaction and missions involving them, rather than just brief encounters.

Summary

  • Overall, Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell is seen as a fun but flawed standalone title that appeals primarily to fans of the series, offering a mix of humor and chaotic gameplay while lacking the depth and customization options that many players expected.
