Deep Silver / Plaion is a developer and publisher.
A German-Austrian video game publisher and distributor, a division of Plaion (formerly Koch Media), a subsidiary of the Embracer Group. Deep Silver's games are available on PC, consoles, and mobile devices. Among the company's key brands are Metro, Dead Island, Saints Row, Red Faction, and Homefront.
The company was founded in November 2002. As a division of the German multimedia distributor Koch Media, Deep Silver was intended to publish and distribute video games. The publisher's beginnings were modest, but in July 2003, Koch Media invested half a million euros in Deep Silver. This cash injection gradually led to the publisher's growing portfolio include increasingly larger projects.
In August 2007, Koch Media acquired the Games That Matter studio, which, under the name Deep Silver Vienna, was transferred to Deep Silver. The studio survived until January 2010, when it got closed. During this time, in collaboration with Sproing Interactive, it created only one game – Cursed Mountain, released in August 2009. In April 2008, Deep Silver established an American branch in Los Angeles.
Over the following years, Deep Silver's publishing catalog included titles such as Risen (October 2009), S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat (February 2010), and nail'd (November 2010). In September 2011, the company released a game that brought worldwide fame not only to its creators but also to the publisher. Dead Island, developed by Polish developer Techland, stormed to the top of the sales charts.
From that point on, the publisher's position began to steadily rise, culminating in THQ's bankruptcy and Deep Silver's acquisition of the "orphaned" Metro and Saints Row franchises, as well as the purchase of Volition Inc. (January 2013). Furthermore, in July 2014, Deep Silver announced that it had acquired the rights to Homefront: The Revolution. The newly formed Dambuster Studios, consisting of former employees of the then-closed Crytek UK studio, was to complete the project.
Meanwhile, in December 2013, Koch Media acquired Fishlabs and transferred it to Deep Silver, where, as Deep Silver Fishlabs, it was to focus on mobile projects. In August 2018, Deep Silver announced that it had also acquired the rights to TimeSplitters. As it turned out almost three years later, they intended to put them to good use.
First, however, Deep Silver's parent company, Koch Media, was acquired by the Swedish holding company Embracer Group, then known as THQ Nordic AB (February 2018). In May 2020, a sort of IP swap took place between them. In exchange for the Risen, Rush for Berlin, Sacred, Second Sight, and Singles: Flirt Up Your Life brands, Koch Media received the Red Faction and Painkiller brands.
Finally, in May 2021, Deep Silver and Koch Media announced that they were reviving the Free Radical Design studio, which will develop a new installment in the TimeSplitters series.
In August 2022, Deep Silver released the fifth installment of the Saints Row series from Volition, a "soft" reboot of the series. However, the game, titled simply Saints Row, did not achieve satisfactory results. Because of that, Embracer Group decided to transfer the team responsible for it from the Deep Silver operating group to Gearbox Entertainment.
In April 2023, Dead Island 2 finally left the development hell, having changed hands several times over the years, and its creation was ultimately handed over to Dambuster Studios. Shortly before its release, the game received a rather warm reception from the industry media; according to Metacritic, its average score was between 74 and 75/100.
December 2023 brought the sad news of the closure of Free Radical Design, which had been resurrected just a year and a half earlier. In April 2024, we learned that Deep Silver would publish Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 from Czech Warhorse Studios.
