Sonic X Shadow Generations is a remastered and content-expanded version of the 2011 platformer titled Sonic Generations. The game was developed by the Sonic Team studio, and its release was handled by SEGA, the company overseeing the brand.

Plot

Sonic X Shadow Generations offers two stories. Fans had the opportunity to experience the first story in the original. Classic Sonic is known from the first games under this brand. Modern Sonic was appearing in the newer parts of the series. They must join forces to once again thwart the sinister plans of the villainous Eggman (Doctor Ivo Robotnik).

The protagonist of the second story is Shadow, the great rival of Sonic, whose task is to confront his nemesis - Black Doom. In order to prevent Black Doom from taking over the world, Shadow must travel back in time, confront painful memories, and unlock new powers, thereby reaching the fullness of his potential.

Daily Mirror: 3 / 5 by Aaron Potter

Sonic X Shadow Generations might not dedicate equal time and attention to its two eponymous components, but it’s still a great way to experience one of the better Sonic the Hedgehog games and celebrate the Year of Shadow with a cool bonus campaign on the side. Sure, the latter is probably over too soon and provides a power set that is less flexible than it initially seems, but there’s plenty of collectible artwork and soundtracks to uncover when replaying levels either score chasing alone or online against friends. Overall though I can see why Shadow Generations could never have been its own standalone release, but as a way to sweeten (and darken) an already excellently put together remaster, this package is a fine addition to the Sonic Generations saga.

Rectify Gaming: 8.5 / 10

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a strong dual game experience that marries nostalgia with innovation. It’s nice to revisit Sonic’s old stomping grounds from 11 years ago but the real star of the show is Shadow’s brand new campaign. I guess there’s still plenty of life left in Sega’s iconic mascot and his edgy counterpart.

Lords Of Gaming : 9.5 / 10 by Robert Kellett

With an emotional narrative that makes you feel things for Sonic's cast, a level of visual presentation completely foreign to the franchise, and some of the best level design from any 3D Boost title, Shadow Generations alone is worth the price of admission. Pairing that with Sonic Generations merely cements Sonic X Shadow Generations as the Sonic game for anyone who loves the franchise or people new to the series.
