The games Limbo and Inside, developed by Playdead, are works that have served as models for a number of video game creations over the years. Among the latter is the independent Greek studio Cymban, which modeled, among other things, on the latter production, preparing its metroidvania-style action adventure game titled Selini. The described project was created thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
In Selini we watch the action from the side. The adventure leads us through foggy, mostly poorly lit locations, such as forests, sandy dunes or the coast. We traverse them in the skin of a replicant, gradually discovering the secrets of the world around us, facing environmental challenges and confronting enemies.
Exploration involves jumping on platforms, avoiding terrain obstacles and avoiding traps. This is helped by the character's abilities, which include underwater jumping, "dashing" (i.e. jumping horizontally) and gliding.
Clashes are dynamic, and hostile machines (walking and flying) and dangerous creatures roaming the locations stand in our way. We eliminate enemies using light and laser attacks or by planting explosive charges.
As atmosphere was a priority for the developers, the battles were prepared in such a way as to be accessible to everyone, both in fights with serial enemies and duels with bosses.
As we progress, we discover secrets and unlock new skills. The latter increase our combat potential and also allow us to venture into places that were not available to us before, making exploration non-linear. In addition, the opportunities that open up to us encourage us to revisit swept locations, as undiscovered secrets may be waiting there.
Selini takes us to a dark sci-fi universe overrun by rogue robots. During the gameplay , we play the role of a lone replicant who sets out on a journey from a war-torn metropolis, along the way exploring the mysteries of the world around him. The plot is conveyed here without the use of words (the latter also applies to the interface, which is based on universal symbols).
