Andrei Chernyshov, leading the studio Anji Games, is an independent developer from Russia who began his journey in the video game industry by creating dynamic, smaller-scale productions. Silly Polly Beast described here is an adventure action game set in a survival horror convention. It is the largest of his projects to date.

Gameplay

In Silly Polly Beast we play as a character named Polly, who becomes trapped in the afterlife after escaping from a nightmarish orphanage.

Variable perspective

The game takes an original approach to the perspective from which the action is presented. While exploring locations, we observe the main character from behind their back (TPP). However, when it comes to combat, the camera changes position, showing events from a bird's-eye view or from the side.

Exploration of the Afterlife

We go through the visited places on foot or on a skateboard. Along the way, we meet their inhabitants and solve puzzles, gradually pushing the story forward. Additionally, we often have to fight against opponents, including both regular enemies from hell and much more powerful bosses.

Combat

Polly has a bracelet at hand that alerts her to impending danger by turning the fog enveloping the city red. The battles are dynamic, and we fight enemies from a distance (using pistols), in close combat (using a skateboard to hit targets), or by utilizing magic. As we progress, we develop our character, allowing Polly to face increasingly greater challenges.

Silly Polly Beast is a great indie game that might really be a candidate for horror game of the year. Its tale is morally ambiguous and has story beats that aren't always clear. And the gameplay is so good that it keeps the tension high all the time, and I mean all the time.

The main cons of the game

  • Combat Balancing Issues: Numerous reviews pointed out that the combat felt unbalanced, with melee attacks being less effective and ammo being scarce, leading to frustration during encounters.
  • Difficulty Spikes: Many players noted that the game can be excessively difficult, even on lower difficulty settings, with some encounters feeling unfair and punishing.
  • Resource Management Problems: Players expressed dissatisfaction with the limited availability of healing items and ammo, which often left them feeling stuck or forced to rely on melee combat, which they found unsatisfying.
  • Checkpoint System: The lack of manual saves and the way checkpoints were implemented (often leading to respawning enemies) contributed to a sense of frustration for players who found themselves in tough situations with low resources.

  • Improved Combat Mechanics: Suggestions included a more intuitive melee combat system, clearer enemy animations, and a better balance between melee and ranged combat.
  • Upgrades and Skill System: Many players expressed a desire for a skill or upgrade system that would allow for character progression and customization, making resource management feel more rewarding.
  • Manual Save Options: Players requested the ability to save their progress manually, especially in tough sections, to avoid being soft-locked due to low health or resources.
  • More Replayability: While some enjoyed the multiple endings, others felt that additional content or challenges would enhance replayability beyond just collecting achievements.

Summary

  • Overall, "Silly Polly Beast" is recognized as a game with significant potential and a strong artistic vision, but it currently struggles with combat balance and resource management issues that detract from the overall experience. Players are hopeful for future updates that could address these concerns.
