The Vietnam War theme is usually taken up by shooters or strategy games. There are exceptions to this rule, however, and one of them is SOG: Vietnam, a roguelite RPG that is the fruit of a collaboration between independent studios PigeonMakesGames and Games By Loki.
In SOG: Vietnam, we view the action in a top-down view. During the gameplay we assume the role of a member of the MACV-SOG squad and complete missions taking place on procedurally generated maps. Tasks usually involve combat or the need to act silently, but their execution may also require establishing contacts with the local population. After completing a given task, you still have to safely evacuate to the base for it to be successful.
The gameplay takes place in turn-based mode, and the locations are divided into square fields on which we move. As the levels are overgrown with jungle, we often can't be sure until the last moment what threats await us in neighboring areas. In addition to enemies (who fight openly or lurk in ambushes) and wild animals, traps are also a danger. All this makes the missions require vigilance and prudent stepping.
As befits an American soldier in Vietnam, here we are armed to the teeth. Before starting a task, we choose our character's equipment, as well as assign ability points. The key to success is the selection of such equipment and the development of such skills that will correspond to the conditions accompanying a given task. This is because you need to approach a nighttime stealth mission differently, and a different approach to an assignment that requires engaging in shooting.
When filling your backpack with weapons and gadgets, it's a good idea to save some space for rations to avoid starvation. In addition to the standard arsenal on the battlefield, we have external support at our disposal, in the form of air strikes, artillery or napalm drops.
Missions crowned with success provide medals and various bonuses that expand the range of combat capabilities. Between crossings, we end up at the base, where we can take a breather and talk to comrades, learning their stories.
If, on the other hand, we lose our footing along the way and don't manage to reach the evacuation point in one piece, we have to create a new character in order to continue what we started as a fallen warrior in her sk?ra.
