Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive is an action RPG, based on the best-selling manhwa (South Korean variation of manga) titled Solo Leveling. The game was developed by the South Korean company Netmarble, which has in its portfolio titles such as Marvel Future Revolution and Game of Thrones: Kingsroad.

Interestingly, despite the similarity of the titles, this is not an update or a new version of Solo Leveling: Arise, but a separate project.

Gameplay

In Solo Leveling: Arise Overdrive the action is viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP).

The game is mainly about engaging in dynamic duels with opponents. Not only ordinary enemies stand in our way, but also powerful bosses. Quick clashes bring to mind slashers and require us to have dexterity and reflexes. The key to success is avoiding attacks and parrying them, as well as launching powerful counterattacks. We also need to link our moves into spectacular combinations, using melee weapons and combat skills.

The main pros of the game

  • Combat Mechanics: The combat is described as smooth, dynamic, and satisfying, with a higher skill ceiling compared to the previous mobile version. Players appreciate the depth of the combat system, including perfect dodges, counterattacks, and the ability to craft weapons.
  • No Gacha Elements: The game is a buy-to-play title without microtransactions, which is a significant improvement over the mobile version. Players can earn everything through gameplay.
  • Visuals and Animation: The graphics and animations are praised for being appealing and well-executed, capturing the essence of the Solo Leveling universe.
  • Story Elements: Fans of the Solo Leveling franchise enjoy the faithful adaptation of the storyline, with many key moments from the manhwa being included.
  • Active Development: Many players note that the developers are responsive to feedback and are actively working on fixing bugs and improving the game.

The main cons of the game

  • Always Online Requirement: The game requires a constant internet connection, which frustrates players, especially for a title that is primarily single-player. This leads to issues with disconnections and lost progress.
  • Performance Issues: Users report significant lag, especially in menus and during co-op play, with frame rate drops and bugs affecting gameplay.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: The game can become monotonous, with repetitive missions and grinding for materials to progress. Some players feel that the difficulty is artificially inflated by enemy health rather than challenging mechanics.
  • Co-op Functionality: The co-op mode is criticized for being buggy and poorly implemented, with frequent connection issues and gameplay glitches.
  • Incomplete Content: Many players express disappointment that the game does not cover the full story arc from the manhwa and that it feels like a rushed product with missing features.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Offline Mode: Many players are requesting a fully offline mode for solo play, as the always-online requirement is seen as unnecessary for a game that can be played alone.
  • Improved Crafting System: Users suggest that the crafting and gear progression systems need clearer mechanics and better rewards for the effort expended.
  • Better Explanation of Mechanics: Players want more transparency regarding how skills and stats affect gameplay, as many feel the current system is confusing and lacks clarity.
  • Expanded Content: There are calls for more story content, additional playable characters, and features that would enhance the game's depth and replayability.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions include better menu navigation, improved hit registration, and more intuitive controls.

Summary

  • Overall, while Solo Leveling: ARISE OVERDRIVE has garnered praise for its combat and visual fidelity, it faces significant criticism regarding its online requirements, performance, and repetitive gameplay. Many users express hope for future updates to address these issues.
