A 2,5D metroidvania with platforming elements, set in a sci-fi world inspired by Greek and Roman mythologies. Somber Echoes takes place on board of the Atromitos spaceship that's overrun by monsters. We explore, climb and deal with enemies using a futuristic spear.
Somber Echoes is a metroidvania set in a universe combining elements of Greek and Roman mythologies with sci-fi. The game was developed by Rock Pocket Games - a Norwegian development studio whose portfolio includes such projects as Moons of Madness and Shiftlings.
In Somber Echoes we play the role of a heroine named Adrestia, who wakes up on board the spaceship Atromitos. A mysterious cataclysm turned this ship into a habitat for monsters from another dimension. To make matters worse, the protagonist's twin sister - Harmony - intends to destroy the Universe. Our character has no choice but to move forward and try to find a way to put an end to the problems before things completely get out of control.
In Somber Echoes we watch the action from the side. Adventure leads us through diverse, futuristic locations on board the Atromitos. Individual levels are connected with each other, creating a kind of extensive labyrinth. While traversing them, Adrestia jumps on platforms, performs wall runs, avoids traps and terrain obstacles, and faces various monsters, including powerful bosses.
The protagonist uses a spear, which she throws at enemies and with which she fights in close combat. The heroine must constantly be on the move, avoid attacks and parry them, as well as launch quick counterattacks. As Adrestia progresses, she gains new powers and skills that allow her to face increasingly greater challenges, as well as reach hard-to-reach places.
Somber Echoes runs on Unreal Engine 5.

In the end, Somber Echoes succeeds in most of the areas that matter. It's a thoughtfully made Metroidvania with some standout mechanics, beautiful environments, and a solid gameplay loop. Its combat is serviceable, occasionally frustrating, but never fundamentally broken. Its story is intriguing, if emotionally distant. Its traversal and level design are its greatest strengths, occasionally held back by finicky controls and minor mechanical flaws. For fans of the genre, especially those who appreciate atmospheric worldbuilding and mythological themes, Somber Echoes offers a rewarding, compact experience that's worth the investment.

One of the most disappointing mixed bags of 2025, there are so many cool ideas and mechanics in Greco-Roman-flavoured metroidvania Somber Echoes, but the way they were implemented kind of ruins what could be something truly fantastic. An intriguing story that’s badly told, neat platforming mechanics that are needlessly strict, exploration that makes you want to find it all and at the same time has you thinking if it’s worth the trouble, and, finally, combat that is great...but only when everything works the way it is supposed to. Fans of the genre should keep an eye on it, but be prepared for something that is annoying and fun in almost equal measures.
